We're all very happy for Runescape's success, VampBite and Bigbloke, and I truly applaud their magnificent success at creating such a superb game.
Nevertheless, if Jagex is counting EVERY account ever made in Runescape since it's inception in that 200 million, it stands to reason that almost 100 million or perhaps even more of those accounts are either bots or 'throwaway' accounts which are absolutely worthless. I myself have 20 inactive free accounts which I just used to test out Runescape before creating my actual members account.
It is foolish and almost childish on Jagex's part to celebrate the creation of 200 million accounts when they know even better than we do just how many of them are in the two categories mentioned above. If they had celebrated, say 2 million active non-bot members accounts in Runescape, I would have still applauded them heartily because it would still be a fantastic achievement. However, creating unnecessary hype by including bots, throwaway accounts, rage-quit accounts, and countless free accounts now in disuse to increase their grand number to 200 million is ridiculous as they know and we know that many of them are not actual accounts meant for fairly playing and enjoying the game.
What can they do better? They can exclude all known bots and make at least an approximate guess at the number of bots still currently in-game and exclude them as well. Even if wrong, it would at least still be an attempt. They should aslo exclude all inactive non-members accounts as chances are that most of these are just throwaways. Inactive non-bot member accounts can be included. The final result would give the true number of Runescape players to be commemorated and be proud of.
