I don't think the counter is rigged. I do believe the number is inflated due to bots/gold farmers.
Not sure if there's a way to do this, but it would be nice to see the number of ACTUAL players since RS was started.
...remembers when you had to USE EACH AND EVERY FISH IN YOUR INVENTORY WITH A RANGE to cook them...

I don't think that Jagex endorses nor creates bots. Every game has them, there is no doubt of that. Jagex has worked on stopping them, there is no doubt of that either. What I will not congratulate Jagex on, is their usage of this information in the way that they are presenting it. I see that the counter still says "Players".
I have been on the front lines of 'bot busting' and for whatever reasons, the first bot nuke didn't keep them out, but I do know that Jagex has been active in the past in combating them. Mod Jacmob was in the BAM Clan for a week, and during that time, he assured us that the 'Optimus' update was on its way. I hear that parts of it has already been released, which I believe would be the performance enhancing updates that were 'mentioned' to be included in the Optimus update.

Jagex, it would go a long ways in proving some sincerity and caring for your 'Legitimate' community, if you simply change it to "Accounts".
I didn't post here to bash Jagex, but only to reveal some truth. If Jagex wants to celebrate our Community and this milestone, they should address the community that is truly Loyal to them, not the vast amount that has been attacking it for years through cheating.
We are not the ones making this milestone negative, it is in Jagex's usage of this number to attempt to reflect a positive image of themselves. WE just aren't foolish enough to see it in any other light than it is really in. 200m accounts representing a history of both a Great Community, and one that has been under attack from cheaters for 11 years.
If you want my congratulations Jagex, you will have to earn it for real, not with cleaver wording and false self praise. WE did not make 200m accounts, the cheaters did. Reward us for what we did do, not for what the cheaters did.

This is the most shameful counter I have ever seen. I am aghast this is something Jagex would put up with any honor. The game is infested with bots, millions and millions of accounts have been created by a relatively few number of people specifically to gold farm.
This is a complete and utter travesty and the biggest joke to date.
Period.
