Inflate the numbers with accounts that haven't been used in 5 or 10 years, bots, gold farmers, and the ever lovin' 2 week trial players. Way to go!
So, who are you trying to impress into buying this mess for big bucks?

their is no dought that runescape is a very popular game and you developers (though have made some howlers ) have kept many of us coming back day after day year after year.
but with the bot situation way out of control (again) why would you want to shove further insult to your loyal and legit player base with this counter?
do you count deleted accounts ? or is the reason why you do not ban bot account because you are after some milestone number ?
Visit the forums ? I would rather go to Hutton orbital

Wow, I read a sampling of messages, most are similar - they love the game and hate the vast quantity of bots. We should remember that only a really worthy game would attract bots in the first place. The bot makers wouldn't spend the time and money to develop cheats for just any game on the internet that has fairly decent security measures.

How are they inflating numbers? They are just celebrating the 200th Millionth account that is going to be created. Seems pretty straightforward simple and honest. Wouldn't you celebrate the birth of your child? Now unfortunately children go astray, sad that I gotta liken bots and other such law breakers as children going astray but it shall do. The point here is to celebrate the creation of the 200th Millionth account.

This is a joke. Let me count the ways...
* Banned accounts. They're counting accounts created, not existing. Every single bot, cheater, hacker, gold farmer or real world trader they have removed still count towards this total.
* Bots. We still have problems with bots, as evidenced by Grand Exchange prices that keep deflating as supply continues to go up. It's not just real players, since prices went way up after the first Bot Nuke day and many bots were disabled.
* Abandoned accounts. Many people may have made an account to play and found they didn't like it, possibly because the best stuff they have to pay for or any sort of significant accomplishment (99s) requires months of commitment. Or they did what they wanted and quit.
* Alt accounts. More than one account may be tied to one real person. They may be all played legitimately, acting independently of each other, but it inflates the account total over the number of actual players.
Finally we get to the number of actual people; the number of paying members is between one and two million, and the number of free players is probably between one and five times that.
Conclusion: Runescape claims to be the "largest" "free" online game. It is far smaller than they appear to claim, and for something to be "free" I would think the whole game would be free, not just a quarter of it.
