A few months back, Jagex held a Community Management Q&A in which I participated in. I had asked direct questions regarding bots in RuneScape, and Jagex's activity in preventing/fighting them.
Here are the answers that were given, which provide some insight as to the magnitude of the relevant 'counter' on the Homepage that is still captioned as "Players Since Launch".

4. Adbots are on the rise, and I have personally been reporting every single one that I find, pm's me or otherwise shows their spamming nuisance. What is being done to combat these RWT adbots?
Before we launched ChatWatch, there was an average of 250,000 adverts in game each day. Now that figure is under 10,000.
This is still being worked on currently to constantly improve this system. So in order to help us, please continue to report any of these you see in game, it really does help.

"3. To the CM Team, there is some ongoing team efforts from the Community to deter botting, and some bot hunts continue, Does the ICU still conduct Community bot hunts with players, and if so, How is that going?"
~The battle against bots is ongoing, we really appreciate the community taking the time to report anything you consider suspicious in-game and would like to ask that this continue. As for ICU bot busts, I'm afraid I don't actually know if they still do this. But I'll try to find out.

It would seem that by the answer that I was given, that at least 10,000 adverts per day by adbot accounts is made, and this was before Jagex stopped combating them effectively with the 'ChatWatch' system, which we know has not been working well in the recent months by the evidence that we see at the Grand Exchange.
250k per day....what a number. This represents a massive amount of 'adbots', and that doesn't include the resource bots that we see every day, at virtually every resource location.
