hmm so why give away discounted membership? 3 possibilities i can think of:

1. it's a way to get everyone on the old rate into the new higher rate after this 1 year deal runs out. a few people have commented that it won't change, but since there's no official word one way or the other, they're just guessing or assuming.
in addition remember that the runecoins and spins don't add any value - they usually cost money but they are *worth* $0.

2. it's a way for the investment company which has been in control of jagex to squeeze as much cash as they can out of the game before they sell it off and move on to new prey. this would fit the profile of investment companies, they usually make companies temporarily more profitable, then pay all that money to themselves and leave the company with so much debt it will surely die.

3. they're going to do a lot of stuff in 2013 that will be very unpopular with a large portion of runescape players, so if we've already signed up for 12 months they know we'll be more likely to put up with it and stick with the game to get our money's worth, and at the end of the year we'll have gotten used to the changes.

could be any one of those, or even 2 of them or all 3!

@Sato Au I think you summed it up pretty much--especially your second and third points. I would have been buying yearly memberships all along for the past 5 years had it of saved me money...this wouldn't save me anything anyway because I'm on the old 5.00 rate.

I cancelled my mems about 3 months ago, but didn't let it lapse . . . I renewed at the EOC and gave it another shot and have enjoyed it...so I still get the discounted rate. But I quit because Jagex tells us they listen to us...and then they don't. The question we have thrown around has been "What about us grandfathered members?!"...and their response? *crickets chirping* This thread has been really on fire today, their silence disgusts me.

Just some good advice to people buying a years membership.....


Noone know if runescape exists in a year from now.... ** carefull.....


my membership runs out in the new year and i am not going to renew it!!
