I wasn't even going to comment here, but the title of the topic doesn't make it any favor.

Generalizing "the runescape community is bad" is already an insult (almost to a personal level), because, firstly, it calls out all the community is problematic where probably only a very small minority may be really bad.

Don't ever forget that this community has you, me, the mods, the players/people you like included, so if you want to address some problem here (and yeah, there's some, and there's some valid suggestion on how to fix that, but that's another talk) at least respect the community as a whole and later isolate and talk about the problems you might be facing here.

Second, we might have problems, but you may always report misconducts in the game and in the forum, they have dozens of people to look into it, and that's already huge, it's not every game out there that is willing to put so much effort in making the human interactions in-game this smooth. Saying that these people, even indirectly, don't do enough, is an insult to them, because they put so much effort in a game they love and also have human limitations and feelings, and an insult from a spoiled brat "full of rights" may also ruin their days.

Lastly, this world here, even with so much effort, still is pretty much like real life and you won't always find flowers and hugs every corner, people need to learn how to live, how to deal with mean people by themselves, learn how to deal with frustration (and anger?), otherwise they will have no social competence to burst their own bubbles and will stay isolated forever. Or being the guy that is seen as the one that loves complaining but offers no solution and is deemed as annoying by the others.

I'm pretty sure we have a lot of supportive and fantastic people out there willing to help, and they worth much more than the mean ones, and also outnumber them. Meet good people, ignore bad people, learn how to deal with frustrations and move on.

This is unfortunate, but what you're saying is true to the extreme.

Many many many people have games, movies, comics, brands and pieces of media entertainment that they absolutely LOVE.
What happens though is that these become part of their personality, they identify with those products on a personal level.
Just look at the console wars and how fired up people get over gaming brands.

This is bad because it means that if somebody criticizes that product, or says something negative about it, then fans of that product take it as a personal attack against THEM.

You're saying something I like is bad?? Then the implication is that I'm DUMB or have bad taste. This is how people think unfortunately.

Because of this my criticisms of Runescape are attacked relentlessly, because I do not have the same rosey happy positive view of this product. And ""fan boys"" take it very seriously.

I think that this community doesn't do enough frankly. I see all sorts of nasty bigoted opinions from players grouped up at minigames and portable skilling locations.

and on the forums specifically, I know there's a couple of users who have been a problem for a few years and nothing is done about them.

It's so bad that people on the forums use third party programs in order to block seeing posts from certain users. Why hasn't jagex added a block feature to a forum that's been around for like 20 YEARS.
When blocking / ignoring is one of the most basic functionalities in online communities?

It tells me that jagex has little love for the forums, and the mods are willing to ignore problems so long as they do not break the all important lines of civility.

I actually agree, elitism and toxic behaviour are at a point these days where it just crossed a line. I´m a German player i play mostly in the German language world 102 and 121.

Today it is literaly common in these world, that you get death threads, talking about drug abuse, insults, bullying. Yes People actually get bullied out of the Game or the Server. Random people get insulted by other People. I won´t say any Names because of the rules here. I recorded and screenshoted 45 Minutes of 11 German Player insulting everyone around them for 3 Hours giving them death threads like kill yourself or hang yourself and so on... I can upload and link it here it is in German so i don´t know if most of you will understand what is written there. I reported them multiple times, even a Player moderate appeared also.. nothing happend..
This goes way to far.. and this needs to change.

In my 15 years in this Game this was the worst i have ever seen and i am not a saint myself.

This is a valid point, i'd love to hear Jagex's answer on this.

Usually this is a sign of underlying problems. I wouldn't take it too personally, instead try to ask them if they are okay or report, ignore and move on.
RuneScape has thousands of players, there is always someone who has bad day or is dealing with other issues in their life. Lets focus on helping others instead of reminding them of their own actions.

I think the game direction is also partly to blame for it. {.......}

Unfortunately i can relate with your post. I think we still see the negative after-effects of evolution of combat, legacy mode isn't solution for content that is mainly developed for RS3 and other significant issues. Its hard to see any bright future regarding the community unless we see another rehaul of game mechanics. (Oops double post, merge please)

I don't pay much attention to the public chat but I do find that some people say some questionable things in event areas and other places where a lot of people end up gathering for long periods of time. Mostly I notice elitism and a lot of frustration and resentment over some things players have been having problems with for a long time. There's also some division in addressing those problems that get in the way of having constructive conversations about them.

Part of the solution for that from what I can tell is to make some much needed updates to address some of the longtime problems and to work on improving things that affect the community such as the forums, multiplayer content and general player interactions.
