I started in september of '02 and played through RuneScape Classic all the way to today. While I am very libertarian and support an individuals right to expression, I am thankful that Classic was closed.
Are JaGeX a champion of ethical and moral business practices? No, they're a shoddy company with shady strategies implemented with every update. Does that mean however that every single outcome that comes to fruition is wrong? No.
By closing down RuneScape classic they will have either diverted the staff towards different projects, therefore giving a nice boost to content in that sector, or have (unfortunately) laid them off, saving money that (you would hope) in some way benefitted us, the consumers.
In reality, did we see any benefit? who's to say, I don't work at JaGeX so I can't comment on the internal discussions and projects, but ultimately, without proof, I have to agree with Telcis on this one and say we must give the benefit of the doubt.
Classic is just that, an antique of a bygone era.
Having said all of that, I see no harm in them allowing you to foot the bill should you choose to do so with all of the proper legal foundations in place to ensure that things were all above board. Their decision to deny this seems... Odd, to me. Then again, at the risk of repeating myself, I am not privvy as to why that decision was made.
