RE: 7.5

@Cyanide X, Hi, I agree that it does appear to be the nature of chat threads for the most part to exclude those members of the community who are not considered part of the 'group'. I agree that the referenced thread tends to be used more as clan based thread rather than a community based thread.

Chat threads are sometimes allowed in the *beginning* to evolve in that direction since the components that make a successful chat thread would have to be considered first. However, these components would only be important in the creation of the chat thread and getting it established but would not be as important after the chat thread was established. Moderation to allow for full community participation at that critical point would make a difference in how the chat thread is used. Moderation to 'exclude' rather than 'include' a variety of participates is what turns a community chat thread into a clan type thread.

If an individual didn't get the 'feeling' of belonging or community (as implied in relationship to one of the goals of the design and purpose of a chat thread) then what options would that individual have if they really wanted to participate on a chat type thread?

Hey there my lovely forum users!

I just want to take this post to apologise. I have been battling with a few issues IRL (health stuff, nothing to worry about) but I am jumping straight back on the forums now to carry on replying to those suggestions and getting all those directories in order! Sorry for the wait or inconvenience.

[[This will probably be posted on a few threads hehe]]

...To everyone else: I've just put a 'No grave bumping' rule in the FSR to stop old threads being recycled without need. It's nice to keep the relevant threads at the top. :]

I've got to say, I have reservations about the 'no grave bumping' addition too, without a little more detail to explain it.

Some threads stay relevant and of value even when they slip down the pages for whatever reason. As Sookie said, we're encouraged to use the search for a thread on a specific topic and post on that thread, rather than make a new thread about the same thing; the pre-existing thread may well be a fair way down the pages. It's still better to do that than to create a new one though.

To give an example, there's a thread here , promoting a popular idea that has also been suggested many times by others elsewhere. It incorporates many suggestions for improvements to the initial idea made by others too, so it's not only valuable to stop other threads being made about the same thing, but because it has developed over time incorporating the contributions of others to make the initial idea workable. That thread does tend to slip down the pages as the OP is no longer active, but personally I think it's still worth keeping alive for such a time when it might actually be considered for implementation. I realise that's not the sort of thread that led you to add the no grave bumping rule, but I do think that rule is too general as it is. If you feel it's really important for it to be there, could you explain further so that people aren't put off from posting on good threads just because they're not in the first few pages?

How about making it a little more flexible, something like:

'Make sure to check threads for relevancy before bumping them. Threads that discuss issues that are no longer relevant or that are replicated on more active threads, should not be bumped.'

What do others think?

Winds,
I'm not quite sure what you mean by 'niche specific'. I mean, chat threads are meant to have at least some relation to the forum in which they're posted I'm thinking. You could call the umbrella category of each chat thread a 'niche' I guess. That's not a bad thing I think, it just means there's some common theme or interest that pulls together the posts on that thread and those who make them. That doesn't necessarily force them to be exclusive of newcomers who share that interest I would have thought, though of course a lot depends on the attitudes of the individuals who use them.

After all, we do have a nice comparison (of similar content posted by two different authors) contained within the contents of this new thread with one post comments appearing to be 'welcome' while the other post comments were not .”

We do? I missed that.

Mistii! Hi! :D
Glad you're back on the scene again and on the mend too!

Treemaid,

Come to think about it I do understand where you and Sookie are coming from with this. We are encouraged to not grave bump, however also to not create new threads for a suggestion already out there. I think the comment you made as an idea encompasses this issue nicely :)

Hahaha thanks very much for the get well and welcome back message. -feels loved-

@Tree,

I don't really think a grave bumping rule should be applied to this forum specifically for the reasons that you laid out. There are a few forums where gravebumping is good and there are some where it's bad.

I'd say gravebumping isn't that bad in this section (assuming that the thread being gravebumped has some discussion value).

With regards to using the search term to see if a thread already exists, that is to look for a thread to see if your question is answered already. The problem with using a 3 month old thread (which hasn't been posted on for as long) is that a lot of the original issues won't be relevant, particularly here.

If a thread is still relevant it's not grave bumping, if it's just being 'bumped' to keep Chewy from eating it even though the discussion has ended, that's just taking up valuable space for more relevant threads.

To be honest if there's a thread which hasn't been posted on for 3 months, it probably isn't going to have any discussion left in it.
