I don't think they do that anymore. I think if a member with a forum avatar becomes f2p, they get to keep their avatar.
I have to say "I think" because I haven't seen a jmod confirm this.
EDIT: I am wrong. Someone just got the helmet but it did take ages for it to change I think.
