I really truly did think that Moderators were supposed to leave a message when they hid a post. That's been the habit and custom for many, many years and I'm almost certain I read somewhere that they were actually required to leave a message.


We are. But when 1 has been left elsewhere some threads/posts hidden require no reply.

As for the thread hides, I think only JMods can do that? Which means there's one around here somewhere.
