It might just be that it's easier to have a bolder bold when it's black text on a white background than when it's white text on a black background, though.
Same--and it's especially not as obvious when you're trying to bold a random word in the middle of a paragraph , where it needs the most emphasis :P

But I do also think that it's because it's white text on black background. White is a softer color, so the extra thickness isn't as crisp.

Hmm, I was just thinking - using the white text color plus bold seems to make the bold a bit heavier and more pronounced. :P

Here's an example of bold text without anything else like the white text color.
