The Problem
We are currently missing a one-stop shop for our Runescape news. Since Jagex have started using social media to disseminate information, we are finding less news is being posted on their own website.

Now, I have nothing against news being posted on social media, but with this there are problems. For example, it's rather annoying when you're trying to search for news and it's only available on one of the many social medias. Also, there are situations where there has been news posted to one place and has been missed by players because they've simply not looked there, and they won't know to look there because they don't know there's new news to be read.

Here's a list of methods Jagex have used to disseminate news to the player base:

Jagex Owned:
> Main website newsposts
> Their own forums
> In-game messages
> Contact centre

Social Media:
> Facebook
> Instagram
> Twitter
-- @Runescape
-- @Jagex
-- @Jagexsupport
> Reddit
> Discord
> Flickr
> Twitch
> Youtube

A recent example of news being hidden away on social media was the system update on 11/03/21. The only news about this was posted to the @Runescape Twitter handle. This meant many players did not know that firstly, this was a real update, and secondly, what the details of the update were about. thread has feedback on this situation.

The Solution
Have a social media news aggregator on the official Runescape website. This would automatically feed in all the news that has been posted to the various social media sites so that the players don't have to search in every single place to find the information. This would be a
clear, obvious and consistent
place for players to go to for information.

This would also be helpful to the Jmods posting the news as they no longer have to remember to replicate the information elsewhere.

Further to this, it would be helpful to the player base if each message was tagged under certain criteria. Players would then be able to set alerts to these set pieces of criteria so that they can be notified when new news gets posted in the subject fields of their interest. As well as the website, this notification could appear in the in-game lobby and/or be posted to the players chat box notifications, similar to how Twitch livestream notifications are posted.

System Updates

As of right now, when the System Update timer appears, there's nothing to say why it has appeared.

It would be great if the in-game system update timer could be clicked and the news webpage regarding that update would open up. This would allow players to instantly find out why there's an update, but also ensure Jagex staff follow protocol and have a public log of each system update.

This is important as if there is no news about the system update, it can be assumed that the update timer was hit by mistake and no update is actually happening. This has happened before in recent months, which makes me believe it could happen again. This is clearly disruptive as players that assume there's no update may put themselves in dangerous situations, whereas those who do assume there's an update, but no update comes, may have wasted time by putting off an activity they were preparing for.

I left a more in depth response to your other thread here .

I'm not sure if you're aware though, I run a month social media news thread here where myself, and anyone else it welcome to share news they find offsite, for all the forumers who only use the forums.

Hi Loki, I've seen your threads, and they are useful.

Unfortunately there's no way of knowing when new information is available, and we're still reliant on you updating the thread in good time.

With an automatic system, it'd take the need of human interaction out of the equation, and could also be made so that new, unread news is more pronounced than older, read news.

There could also be a tier or grouping system on the level of news submitted. For example, some people may regard news regarding social competitions higher than news on future updates. In my opinion, it would be very useful to give the players the power to choose which news they want to hear about more as they'd be more receptive to what they see. Many players may switch off to news because they don't want to know about every little detail, and the stuff they want to know about gets lost in the chuff.

Speaking from a personal point of view, there are barely any people I come across in game that read the news. They rely on people in game to tell them what happened or is happening. These are the people who should be the target audience for this sort of thing.

We already have such "social media aggregator":

Quick find code: 15-16-726-66207418

The problem is OSRS System Updates among other messages are very often not even posted by Jmods on social media, let alone the OSRS forums, although RS3 Jmods do regularly post such System Update reminders before every weekly update.

The question is why aren't there any OSRS forum users trying to help their beloved games and fellow OSRS forum users out?

because OSRS is pretty much staking and pking,,,
there is no reward in being nice

How does it have anything to do with what OP suggested? Even if OSRS is just staking and pking, doesn't it have staking and pking updates information to disseminate?

This QFC takes us to a locked Recent Updates thread. I think you picked up the wrong code.

As I've already mentioned on another thread, I can't answer this because I'm not involved with OS. However, if I were, I'd probably be campaigning for a news post to be attached to each system update - pretty much what I'm asking for here. I've already explained at the start of this thread why I believe this to be important.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the information that Jagex does give out. I'm merely suggesting a way that would make it easier for Jmods to disseminate news and easier for RS players to find. Aside from "OS manages fine without it", is there an issue you have with this principle?

But you never answered our (not only my but OP's) question. OSRS still have weekly updates, and even IF OSRS only has staking and pking content, there is still System Update information, which according to OP, should be disseminated to us through the RSOF. :)
