Just saw this, Forum Post Indicator

http://i.imgur.com/o2bOA1w.png http://i.imgur.com/8Q4YACH.png

Posted on there and didn't like it. Thought I really... really thought that Post Indicator was Online Status in other words. The picture made me think that since that's what my eyes were drawn to. I'm hoping they don't go through with it, but if they do there will be a return of the now strike-worthy ' postcount ' posts.

I saw your post :)

There so much I could say about this, but I don't wish to go off topic on that thread. But since this thread is about forums I might as well get it out right now :)

I don't a have a problem with post count, but I have little interest in it since it tells me nothing I need to know. But just because it doesn't do anything for me isn't why I down on the proposed idea. It's not the count, it's rating system for the count that I really don't like.

They don't need to reinvent the wheel to make a fair, useful system. There are many informational forums that are highly competitive and work well. Model from those, use what works. In the sites I'm thinking of, rewards/badges/etc are for being informative, helpful, or even for asking a good question.

The idea is that badge/icon tells you something useful about the person's post history, about their credibility. Not how many characters they've typed or posts they've made.

Jagex so far do little to encourage quality and discourage spam. If they just did that then the post count wouldn't be perfect, but it wouldn't be meaningless to me either. Right now, because of the nature of these forums, high postcount does nothing for your credibility, and that's a big part of what my problem is.

Sounds good. Unfortunately will fail because people over-think the negatives. The exact same thing happened when Master capes were being discussed - people immediately jumped to conclusions saying how awful everyone would become, and how prices would drastically change for the worse. Obviously the reality was far less than what was expected. Nothing changed, and tbh, the same will happen if this indicator came out.

I guess it's why these forums are still lacking. Updates are shot down mostly because of people's behavioural problems.

Hey Jagex, make links on public forums please?
- Nope, Sorry. This would encourage hackers to manifest and take full control over the forums. Denied.

Make post count more visible?!? :D
- Denied. This would encourage spamming, the forums would plung into chaos, and won't be the same ever again. This would decimate the forums once and for all.

Add a like/dislike feature, like other boards have?
- Denied. People would use this negatively, creating a massive popularity contest that would never be stopped.

Seems like all these forums will ever get are "small" updates. The big ones will be shot down because of "people".
.

I have given are more thoughtful and thorough reply to the thread at hand. There is likely more to be said once the proposed feature is shown before implementation, but I'll wait and see where it all lands probably by the next TAPP day.

^Just read that, nice post btw.

Just saw this...

Original message details are unavailable.
The driving factor behind this idea is to promote forum activity. The forums are not as busy as they used to be, and I've made it a small mission of mine to help increase the activity of them again. In my opinion, this is one really good way of doing that

I'm not posting on that thread again, I said what I needed to say. But this quote really gets to me. The simplest way to drive more traffic here is to prioritise.

I've said this before, If every social media runescape related Jmod post were also posted here these forums would be a hive of activity.

Yes I know it's hard for jmods to post here because of log in restrictions. So why not fix that?

I support Kalaya's idea and your post, RWH. But I have to say I really dislike any sort of upvote/downvote systems, mainly because people downvote you when they disagree with you (this is actually a violation of the Reddiquette on Reddit). That's all there is to it.

I also agree with you, Indy. This might increase forum activity, but won't really increase the quality of posts. Quality > Quantity. Even though I support the idea, let's be honest, people will simply farm postcount until they get their desired badge. I mean, the idea is cool and I've always wanted something along the lines, but her reasoning is not really accurate.

Hiya Morgypie :)

Tbh the whole subject was a dicey area for me until Mod Kalaya made it clear the intention is not for it to be anything practical. It's not meant to be helpful in any way.

It's a coloured dot they wan't to put on our avatar, nothing more.

The meaning of postcount is dependant on the forum structure, rules and how it's moderated. For some forums it helps build a profile. On RSOF the stereotypical view of high postcount isn't what I'd consider desirable. Unfortunately that view is probably a fair generalisation.

I expressed my concerns and offered constructive feedback. All I'm really asking is for a system that would help make that information form an accurate profile.

I'm not saying every post has be of high standard and contribute something worthwhile. But at the same I have to ask...

Are the posts from someone with high post count (10k, 20k, 50k, 100k) worth reading? And Is a colour rating system (that's been proposed) indicative of the contributions that person has made to the forums?

We cant really compare postcount with other forums that have different rules. So I guess I'll ask a rhetorical question. What does a high RSOF post count really mean?

That's totally cool, and tbh I like to know about this stuff. Quite often it's these kind of things that Linkify quietly fixes.

Thanks for the QFC. I went and had a quick look without Linkify and yep that post has some minor issues.

I haven't looked closely at it but I will :)

Edit: Found the issue(s)

She has a badly nested link tag.
http://i.imgur.com/2Qs0goo.png

and an unclosed div tag

http://i.imgur.com/nhxUkV1.png

That's the html she's posted and the unclosed div gets closed by the browser's best guess. Chrome closed the tag but it can't know exactly where it was intended to be so the post is a little broken. But if chrome didn't close it, it would be much worse.

Nothing I can do about that. Before the reskin I actually made linkify stop running on jmod posts because they were so problematic. This isn't that serious tbh, just simple mistakes.
