The way the thread search form of RSOF works is kind of inconvenient, I wonder what people would think of having a 'search threads in this forum' feature that automatically fills in some parts of the search form to make searching more convenient?
Should be okay again, not even sure what I did to fix it :/
@Blasty,
I'm not sure how to implement and make it more convenient, do you mean something like an option (or a checkbox) in the advanced search, like search this section only?
I have some concerns with the search thing, that's actually why I have left it alone. I feel I'd be opening a can worms by going there. But your suggestion doesn't seem like it would be a major thing to do.
The entire thread search could use some improving, and this is why I'm cautious about doing much in this area (it's so broken already, and from within the client it's beyond repair). We can't search for short thread titles. If there is a hyphen (like in this thread's title) and that's omitted, searching "rs linkify" wont bring up this thread in results, I get zero results.
The option (Show threads created by) do nothing and there is no real option to search for threads created at a specific time.
I actually google all my non specialist forum searches because that at least works.
Oh I just found out (or knew but then forgot) if you enter a non-qfc term in the qfc search box, it searches thread titles.
That makes my convenience suggestion not as much of a boost in convenience as I thought.
The problem I have with the search form interface itself is that the dropdown select menus don't have keyboard shortcuts, so if you want to find a specific forum to search in, you have to scroll through the short, fixed-height list.
If the thread can be found from the searched term without having to filter by forum then there's not a lot to gain from adding something that does it automatically (when you're viewing the forum).
Maybe a drop down when you focus on the search box that lets you choose from a set of likely filters? (search from this forum is all I can think of that might be useful though)
@Blasty, you make some good points. I was completely unaware that the drop downs for search categories aren't behaving like standard ones.
Generally hitting a letter on your keyboard will cycle through all the options that start with that letter (assuming the combo box has focus). Also arrow keys should allow for navigation among the drop down items.
I'm unsure why they did something to prevent/break the default behaviour. I know they are custom dropdowns but even so, that's no reason to give them less functionality.
I also didn't know that about the QFC search, at least that's handy.
A simple fix may be to just replace the drop down combos with standard ones that have the default, standard behaviour.
Anyway you've given me some new info and some nice ideas to play with
