I tried and failed at removing the background as well lol, just could not get all the white away without cutting off like 30% of the hair o_O

That was the same problem I was having. I felt it was taking me too long so I gave up. Pretty sure if I put the time in I could do it, but I like to submit the avatar codes asap.

Edit:
This was my final attempt, I gave it some glow around the edges, and it kind of helped. But I don't feel comfortable making big changes to pic's unless I'm asked. Besides the background on the original is fine, anything I did changed the feel of the pic.
