Hiya Lust, thanks for that. I didn't know all those details, though I assumed anonymous uploads would get the raw end of the deal and that's fair enough too.

I have done some testing since I last posted (as an account holder). When I upload an image that's less than 5mb and then download it it comes back slightly smaller. There is barely any difference in appearance in most cases, but not all cases.

Larger files seem to suffer too, images with gradients (blue sky, sunsets and such) suffer the most. Pictures of cats, dogs, teddybears (stuff covered in fur) come out looking fine. It really does depend on the image.

Pasting from the clipboard is really bad though, no matter what kind of image (file size well under 5mb) comes out looking noticeably bad. Imgur's claims of compression certainly don't hold up when copy/pasting (my poor snail on mushroom pic is proof of that).

Some compression is be expected and tbh if there was none the internet wouldn't work. But in some cases they go too far imo.

I mean allowing 20mb images (that's huge, an example of a 20mb jpeg on wiki commons is a 23,680 × 2,144 pixels) and at the same time excessively dumbing down a 750kb clipboard paste makes no sense to me.

I quite like Imgur, they provide direct links and unlimited uploads and their site is pretty easy to use. I was just surprised at how much certain images deteriorated in some cases. Even with the info you posted I'm still seeing some inconsistencies but in all fairness that could be just because I'm looking for it.

I just hope HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) gains widespread support so we can get away from some of the older formats.

Edit: Test image, this little guy sat next to me outside while I was having my morning coffee.

Nikon D5200, bought it secondhand from a friend who upgraded to a full frame camera. I only have two lenses.

For macro I reverse my lens. I use the kit lens (Nikon 18-55MM F/3.5-5.6G VR II) with a reversing ring + manual aperture ring. It's very primitive because the camera can't talk to the lens when in reverse, kind of extreme full manual but lots of fun :)

For any telephoto stuff I use a Tamron 18-270mm. It's not the best lens, just an okay all rounder.

And when I want to shoot as sharp as I can without macro or telephoto I use my Nikon 18-55MM without reversing. I know its just a kit lens but I love it, it's pretty sharp, feels smooth and is just nice to shoot with.

I'm thinking of getting a nice macro lens eventually. I wasn't sure if I'd dig macro stuff so I did it cheap with a reversing setup to see if I like it. Turns out I like it alot.

The pics I've posted here have all been with the Nikon 18-55MM, either in reverse or normal.

Edit: Here's a shot with the Tamron 18-270mm, you can see it's not the sharpest, but that's handheld as I don't have a tripod yet. I think (hope) a tripod will improve sharpness.

Oh I see, still very nice though!

Was taking short videos a while back for some projects and didn't realise how shaky my hands seemed to be. Still on the hunt for my misplaced memory card, slightly annoyed I have no recollection where I left it.

Nothing amazing since these are earlier ones on my other card I found, and was still working things out. Lots of noise in the second one :(

Nice shots, nice clean shot of the rotor blades. When I capture fast moving objects my pics often end up underexposed. Though I'm getting better...slowly.

And that second pic is good, low light stuff is really tricky (grain at high ISO is pretty hard to avoid). You captured the lights/smoke/everything really nicely.

I notice how shaky I am when shooting macro, less than 1mm movement throws the subject out of focus. Where possible I don't let the ambient lighting expose my shot and use the flash to freeze motion (the motion being camera shake). Need the right time and place for that and it's not always a good substitute for a steady hand, but when it works it's nice :)
