I joined HLF in 2011 and regularly posted through to 2013. Sure, the HLF was smaller back then, but that was the appeal of it. It was a small and exclusively community of like-minded players who just wanted a have fun with a little bit of banter. We could interact with Jmods directly, and the rules here were far more relaxed compared to the regular forums.
In 2013, micro-transactions went mainstream and RuneScape's milking process began. Around this time, HLF started to see a huge influx of what we call "Newfags", those who maxed with the help of free XP giveaways and Squeal of Fortune. HLF hit its all-time peak in activity in 2013 and has been on the decline since.
With these Newfags came a whole bunch of trolls and shitposters who had nothing to contribute. There was a generational divide between the OG crew and the Newfags, and a lot of Us vs. Them mentality plaguing the HLF.
After what felt like ages of shitposting, Mod Lee finally stepped in and laid down the rules. Either we get along, or we're banned from here. Additionally, around this time, Reddit and Twitter were trending and slowly becoming mainstream. Now its 2017 and Reddit is the main platform of communication that Jagex uses now, so that's where everyone went.
