This is my first time posting in HLF and RSOF in 14 months. I sadly used to frequent HLF heavily from 2012-2015.

Reasons:

Reddit

Outdated forums (social media really drove the preference for how a community should be structured)

Loss of personality such as the people we enjoy checking forums for hilarious posts. This was unavoidable because many of us got older and grew out of RuneScape. Also the idea of spending 15 years on here wasn't pretty for me.

Changes in HLF rules over the years. Some forum games and inside jokes were fun, props to RWH here for keeping up the post count.

Loss of 'cool' JMods. I'm impressed Mod Lee is still around, so I'm happy about it though.

No interesting game content - Essentially, not a lot to be excited these days we all can talk about. Even when Solak came out, it was just another boss, another way to make gp.

Achievement - Back then, you had to put in years and years of effort just to be maxed. There were camaraderie in the community since all of us went through the same long hours at the screen to get here.

So from 2012 onwards, it has gotten easier to max. Subjectively, it got to the point HLF was just a cheap prize for maxing. Imo, the paradigm in RuneScape really shifted. Getting maxed on RS is just the tutorial and the true game begins when you max.

I'm just happy we all had good memories of HLF. HLF won't be the same again.

I believe that if the forums received more JMod interaction than social media, the forums would be thriving like they did years ago. Since the release of Social Media, a forum platform, has seen a decline worldwide because of greater access to discuss ideas.

If Jagex reverted to supporting platforms but only responding on the forums, they would be very active everyday.

the real reason is risk management. jagex has to pick being a platform or a publisher.

https://www.eff.org/issues/cda230

I mean... no one has told them that they have to do it yet, but its coming, and its going to change everything.

edit/add: like if I write about "irish mob" in texas thats one thing, but jagex wouldnt want to comment on any such thing, and then be responsible for what I said or what they said.

so yeah. it'll mean not just HLF, but the whole of RSOF. They already know theyre gonna have to close the whole rsof, and just have us use reddit. In this case I gotta admit I dont like it, but a non-HLF thread has a url that can be shared and read by non players, and thats legally bad for them. Its arguable that they -publish- what exists at rsof the platform. Reddit no way. Reddit and theyre safe.
I have quit rsof because moderator found comments about darklight bonus damage on demons "off topic" for wildy flash mobs full of demons

The difference with HLF being that it's hidden from public view, and access needs to be earned.

Which of course begs the question: why don't Jagex just make the entire forum non-public? There are already requirements that need to be met before players can post, so hiding the forums or locking-out forum access until those requirements are met would circumvent the problem entirely.

I suppose that *could* be done, but that would depend entirely on factors such as forum usage. If forum usage continues to decline, there will be less and less justification to keep it open at all, let alone make sweeping changes to the way it functions.

High Level feedback was removed because Jagex decided they were no longer interested in their player base.

Keeping the forum didn't cost them anything. They just choose to remove it.

I don't reddit, and seldom discord. People tell me the Jmods have posted to reddit with information about the game. Then I look in the forums, and see no such information. I learned about the MSR from a google doc.

I figure all of the RS forums will be removed, one at a time.
