Really... People think itll be area wide? More likely itll be a party thing, when you are killing a boss with your friends. Having global voice chat would be annoying and probably crash the game..
Biggest thing with the in game voice chat... Is how will it be better than Vent, or Skype ect. They have tonnes of features. In WoW, they have voice chat in game but there's no point in using it as Ventrillo far surpasses it. A lot of people also can't even get it to accept their mics, and the voice quality is poor.
Personally, before voice chat, I would like to see the chat channels overhauled. As it is, its all on the same system, so your PMs, clan and other chats are devoured by General. You can't even use the tabs in crowded GE's cause it wipes the chat. It would be nice to have them separate. Also having the channels customizable, so they show only what you want to see would be nice. Id like the focus to be on improving what we have, rather than bringing something new first.

I think the poll was a little lax, It needed to ask why I don't use voice chat. I would like to use voice chat but I don't have other friends on Runescape that do the same things. The chat system would need to link teams in minigames and clans for PVP as well as linking individual players for it to really catch on.

First of all I play Runescape BECAUSE I enjoy a voice chat free environment. I do not want to hear anyone going on about racial comments, swearing or whatever else. I like the censor option that I can turn it on or off and the text doesn't really bother me so much but hearing a voice saying things is completely different.

Secondly, if I were a player moderator, I would completely hate the idea of a public voice chat and would be always have it turned off. They get enough flack from other players when those players thing the pmod isn't doing what they are supposed to. Can you imagine a pmod with voice chat off and 10 people start running up to them saying will you mute this guy...don't you hear him...fail mod wtf....
I also think there will be a lot of people that will not want to use voice chat and will be harrassed about not using it. Although it will probably affect female characters more than male characters there will certainly be issues with players trying to force others to use the voice chat to 'prove ur a ********** girl' and other abusive type comments.
I think it would create chaos if a public voice chat were implemented.
Best case scenario would be no voice chat.
Next best would be clan chat ONLY. And even then I don't care for the idea. I use popular clan chats for star finding, penguin hunting and other things. I think the same problems I mentioned would be problems there as well.
If people want to use a voice chat there are plenty of options they can use both free and paid. Let them use one of those as they are doing now and leave voice chat off of runescape!

EDIT: Looking at above post though....leaving out voice chat would keep things classic, and would give mods a better chance.

First of all, I think this is a good idea, especially because for some reason I can't get Ventrilo to work...
But I suggest limiting voice chat to clan chat and private chat only, as several people have already pointed out it would just be too messy for it to be public. However, I disagree with Kyreikal in that we should improve our existing systems, rather than add this. I think the current chat systems are (almost) perfectly fine and welcome the idea of a voice chat for clan and private chats.

i think if this dose come to rs it should me something extra to pay for not given.

my reason is for parents to have the option to pay extra to let there child have it or not.
for the older players that pay for rs that could pay the extra should know better and know how to behave on a voice chat.
there still should be rules for the use.

Assuming that Jagex will be able to implement it carefully, I think its a great idea.
I agree that public voice chat would be a terrible idea. Nor do I think it would be possible without severe server taxing.
From my opinion, it should be in minigames, clan chats, private messages, and maybe other things I'm over looking with a fairly limited amount of chatting going on.
I agree that all players should have the option to turn voice chatting off and on as they please as individuals. But I also think there should be multiple factors of voice chat limitations in clan chats.
There should be an option for the clan as a whole on whether or not voice chatting is possible in the chat. If clan voice chatting is off, no voice chat is possible for the clan chat.
There should also be an option for it in individual clan ranks. An option so that members of that rank can or can't hear the voice chatting. And an option so that members of that rank can or can't use the voice chat. And maybe I'm getting kind of too deep into this, but there should be something to make it so you can only hear/talk to the voice chat of others of your rank. As in... Both admins and officers can use the voice chat to its full potential, but officers can only talk to and hear other officers. Same for admins. Keep in mind that this limiter will be an option within the clan setup.
It would also be good to specify which ranks you can hear & talk to, as in, make it so that a rank can talk to/hear voice chat from any amount of specified other ranks. And maybe it would be good to keep that as individual options. Say... The admins wanted to say something to the whole chat, but didn't want to hear the voices of the other ranks.
And the other thing is. Give people in clan chat the ability to, assuming they have the priveleges to do so, kick someone from the voice chat instead of kicking him out of the whole clan chat. Incase an individual clan member was using the voice chat in a abusive or foul manner.

I like this idea to have voice chat. It would make alot of things easier. I often find that I'm chatting with a friend while playing runescape. It helps get things done faster and since i dont really type that fast, having voice chat in game would be a plus+. if we do get voice chat, let it be a group thing and not everyone please..
