In playing many other games I've always found one thing....Hardly anyone uses the built in game voice chat feature unless it's a last resort. Usually ends up sounding garbled or lagged. Not sure why .
BUT seems most clans/guilds prefer Ventrillo, some use Teamspeak...and a handful use *fire or Skype.
The problems I see with an in game system (like most games) is mainly having it limited to only the area you are in, so say you are all standing around varrock fountain you can hear each other AND strangers around you...but if one of you trails off to the bank you are "in the dark" for chat and cant hear them anymore.

And there are a lot of other games that actually have a better voice chat service than Ventrilo/TS3 - it's funny that people don't seem to be mentioning the ones that are good.
If we do decide to add voice chat then we won't add it if it isn't good. It would obviously need to be as good or better than what people are using at the minute and your feedback would shape design decisions (public channels, password protection etc).
I think it's key that people have an open mind when it comes to voice chat. RuneScape isn't like any other game so it's not fair to compare something we haven't even decided on to other games. :P

I've never heard of it, but it sounds kewl because some of my friends have reeeaaaally bad spelling and u can't tell what they're trying to type sometimes :@ besides, I hate when I have typos and stuff like that :/ and you would be able to communicate faster, so this sounds like an excellent idea.
EDIT:
How would you be able to report abuse with this?

Voice chat would be a great idea, Reasoning i believe is mainly used when "bossing" ect.. Because its quicker and more efficient than taking your mouse time typing what needs to be done or to make "call outs". Clan's rely on voice chat via Skype, Ventrilo ect.. for some reasons. Usually the females dont join in, hmm i wonder why that is...loool. anyways i like the idea alot. +1 for voice chat from me.
update: Reply to kid above me. ^^
I think after there filter update, That we need to move past the reporting language. Im not saying over all, but most people i believe are able to handle the maturity level required with a voice-chat system. I've been playing since classic(legit on this account) and i've seen more adults on here than i ever thought i would. That is of course including myself, We need to move past the extreme language reporting. If someone "swears" move on. Keep your filter on and mind your own. If its directed toward you in a threatening manor then yes of course, you should use that handy dandy button.

I don't really like this idea, as it's completely
unnecessary.
From what I've read, it's only application would be clan chat, which I suppose is ok for casual conversation, but if your clan is at a boss, you'd have people talking over each other, which could result in death, if given conflicting orders.
At least with typing you can clearly see what each person is saying.
@Dudeman

While voice chat would get rid of typos, different people from different places say things in different ways, so you'd only replace one problem with another.

I have a little idea of how it could be used though. If you wanted to talk to someone, you can right-click on the player and there would be an option to invite to voice chat or something. For the clan chats, you can do the same by right-clicking on another players name and see that option. It would be cool if you can make group calls and talk to more than one person.

I dont know how well this works,I see that timbo wrote that some games have good voice chat. 'some' is nto enough. far more are crap. If you make it ingame I hope it is GOOD, I hope you can invite FRIENDS ONLY. That you can perhaps perm mute people (more then 200 please)to not hear their jibber jabber. I hope its in small sessions, as in 1 on 1 or tops 10-50 people for clans. NO entire worlds. I'd end up raging if i can hear some kid saying selling dragon legs 500 times.
As for sound beng good quality, I love the skype quality, much better then teamspeak/vent (eventhoguh you can adjust package) but I dont see jagex giving a super high package rating.
If you do make voice chat, can we cross combine? As I also talk to rs friends when I am on the computer playing other games. Without me having to have rs open.
Is voice chat going to be a stand alone program or integrated ingame? more info please.

ANd sorry if these things have been said/awnsered. I cba to read 64 pages of text. Can some J mod cluster relevant info and put it in the first message as a FAQ or something? Cheers.

Hah, I love this idea!
Of course it would be harder to report people and recording everything would take in too much memory. That was a good remark I've read here.
But if we would be able to (really) talk to our friends and clan mates, I'd sure try it out.
The response to the guy that asked about the reporting was kinda right too. This guy said most people are mature enough to keep their voice down when really 'talking' to others. Eep? What about the raging kids you hear in recorded game video's? I don't think there're as many of those that these vids show. I've never played any game with voice chat, my brother does, and I've never heard anyone raging there. You've also got the option to choose who can hear you and who you can hear, and I'm sure that that's easy to apply IF RuneScape would introduce it into the game :) So, when people start raging, just put it off.. it's as easy as ignoring someone, but most people don't do this because they want to see what the offending person is saying to others. If you'd put off voice chat you could still see them type.
Hope you'll apply it to the game, Jagex :D !
Greetz.
EDIT: People Should be able to see that other's can't hear them, which is not the case with ignoring people.
