Voice chat would be nice and convenient to use, but i have to agree with some of the other posts, the Runescape community is not responsible or mature enough to handle voice chat. The voice chat would have some serious issues. Player Mods are not everywhere, so there would be nothing to stop players from spamming the public chat, or using vulgar and inappropriate language. If we do have a voice chat added, I would suggest the chat only apply to clans, or have a separate client for chatting with your friends, like skype, and other voice chats. A public chat would make the servers lag, and some people don’t want to or cannot have the voice chat on but they don’t want to be left out on a conversation, and without voice chat if you miss something, you only have to scroll up to the part you missed.
Personally I would like the ability to chat, but I would only use it if I could control the people that can chat with me, I don’t mean having an ignore list, I mean having a list of people that could talk to me. Also look at the Grand Exchange, sometimes my laptop (only 2 months old) cannot handle the lag from all the players, and all the chats, let alone having a voice chat increasing the lag.
Those are just my thoughts on the idea, it’s a nice idea, but voice chat wouldn’t be for me unless it was only for people on my friend list or in my clan, there would be too many problems with a public voice chat.
I personally do not use voice chat.. Just don't like it.
BUT!
What i would LOVE to see updated is the amount of text you can say at a time.
Having to type one line at a time gets old. If you could allow more then one line chat I would love that:]
well it sounds like it has its ups and downs but it would be a cool if u can only talk while using private chats to your friends only people you added and anyways i just use my xbox
I think that adding a voice chat option to RuneScape would be a bad idea and heres why:
1) The extra bandwidth need to support open talking (not having to hit a button to speak) is quite high. In the poll it asks if we use *box Live or other things to voice chat. I can remember many games on xbox live that required a button to activate your mic before speaking so that the bandwidth would be less and that was with just a maximum of 16 people playing together. In RuneScape were talking about whole servers of people trying to chat. Granted the servers are high speed but the added bandwidth would surely change gameplay.
2) I love chatting with my friends while playing RuneScape. I do it every session. I may speak for myself but I would keep using programs like Skype, the one I use now, to voip. Skype is by far the cleanest, most efficient, voip app around and I don't think a RuneScape in game chat could compare purely because a RuneScape has to cater to the game and thus wouldn't be a very customizable option.
3) The higher RuneScape members fee. I don't see how this would be avoidable from a business standpoint. Due to the higher need of bandwidth (see "1)"
your cost for servers would go up which would in turn make your product, RuneScape members, cost more. I personally don't want to start paying WoW prices as I see them as ridiculous and is one of the reasons I don't play WoW.
4) The RuneScape community, in my opinion, would diminish. I don't want to hear some 13 year old kid complain about losing his iron platebody and ask me for 1m to help him out. I definitely don't want to hear his voice when he asks. Even if it was a clan chat option then I would have to limit my chat to certain ranks and I don't want the hassle. I like just having Skype with my two friends that I play rs with and nobody can interrupt us.
Thats all for now as I am out of characters and don't want to make another post.
I agree, having the chat window allow for multiple lines of text would be nice. it does get annoying when you have to look for where your sentence cut off to know where to start on your next line, and if you try to explain something to someone it almost always takes more than one line of text.
Not interested in hearing justin biebers around runescape.
I use skype to talk to close people but I am not interested in talking to 12 year olds who haven't hit ******* yet.
I'd be surprisingly okay with this...! I'm awfully attached to my yellow text and all, but I think I'd enjoy using this.
I've never really used voice chat on the computer, but I do use a headset for console gaming.
If you could find a good system for jumping in/out of different sections of chat (clan or public) and controlling who can or cannot hear you, I'd be completely for this being supported in RuneScape.
