Introduction

Welcome to the February edition of the Gielinor Globe, the RuneScape forums' very own monthly community newsletter.
Unless you've been spending a lot of time in the Living Rock caverns lately, you probably know that this is an historic month. As a result of the first ever RuneScape players' referendum , we are proud to announce the return of Free Trade and the Wilderness on 1 February.
So you will probably not be surprised to notice a Free Trade/Wilderness theme throughout much of the Gielinor Globe's content this month. This month's creative submissions from players have a combat theme, and we have some insights into how the update will affect the clan community.
You can also learn about the International Fight Knights II competition that we recently ran, and get some info about the various social network sites that Jagex is using to reach out into the wider community on the web.
Mod Mark H will be inviting you to flex your creative muscles and submit your ideas for an emote to be added to the game.
And of course we haven't forgotten about the usual monthly features that you've come to know and love. Read on for the Quiz Quest, Caption Competition and Who The Zamorak? sections.
Thanks for reading the Gielinor Globe and happy RuneScaping! :D

International Fight Knights II winners' prize!

Those of you who follow PvP events will remember the International Fight Knights II tournament which took place in December.
The winning country was Lithuania ! To commemorate their victory, we have created a wallpaper in the colours of the Lithuanian national flag - replacing the colours of the IFK1 winners, Poland.

Higher-resolution versions are available in the Downloads and Wallpapers section of the RuneScape site.
While remembering The Fight Knights Tournament we must not forget about the community in India who dominated the battlefield in the clan fights, not to mention the 8000+ players from 16 countries who fought in over 60 battles during the tournament.
Although this tournament has finished, there are more to come! To learn about what events, tournaments and adventures we have planned for the coming month, head over to the Events forum !

Competition Update

January has played host to the Clan Logo competition. This one is for all you creative people out there and involves designing a clan logo that'll actually be included in-game along with our Tools for Clans update!
Don't worry if you aren't the arty type, this competition is all about the idea behind your logo so you needn't spend weeks coming up with a masterpiece. We've already received thousands of entries, but the competition doesn't end until January 30th, so there's still time to enter!
To find more details on this competition check the forum thread .
With the Wilderness and Free Trade set to return on 1 February, we recently held a competition to gather your hints and tips on all things Free Trade and Wilderness-related. We've compiled our top 10 favourite tips and, with the help of some familiar faces, we have put together an awesome YouTube video. Whether you're a noob or a Wildy veteran, you'll want to check out our YouTube channel when the video goes live to see the ten best entries for the competition.

Clan Update

1149 days .
Or 3 years, 1 month and 22 days. That's the amount of time between the removal of free trade and the old Wilderness and their return on 1st February 2011.
Since the announcement of the return of free trade and the Wilderness, the clan community has been buzzing with activity. We received more clan leader applications on that one day than we usually get in an entire week, clan posts across the whole forums showed a sharp increase, and dozens of old clans are reforming: Damage Incorporated , Resurrected Forces and Solar Angels to name but a few. As the excitement builds, the amount of clan members coming out of retirement is extraordinary, and it looks like Wildy clans are going to be bigger and deadlier than ever.
RuneScape is constantly evolving, and the innovations introduced throughout the past few years will give PKing clans a unique opportunity to create new tactics to lead the way in Wildy battles. For example, since the Wildy's last incarnation, Summoning has been added to the game. With the ability to bring your companions to fight by your side, the wisest warriors should already be planning some unique strategies to employ. Armour and weapon changes will also lead to combat that could be very different from the original Wildy.
With everyone gearing up and preparing for the 1st of February, how is this going to impact non-PvP clans, and what changes will free trade bring? To discuss these questions, we have an article from top skilling clan Supreme Skillers later in the newsletter. Some of the awesome possibilities now opening up for clans might include offering prizes for clan events or rewarding hard-working members for their efforts. Very soon you will be able to give your members anything you want to - whether it's a million coins or a million cabbages! So this update is going to bring joy to a wide variety of players, not just PKers.
The recent Clan Celebration Festival has provided warriors and skilling masters the chance to prove themselves to some of the best clans in RuneScape though a series of challenges and battles in-game. The festival has also given players an idea of the clans and activities out there which will help them prepare for the coming updates!
Whether you're gathering as many sets of rune armour as you can get your hands on, working out a strategy to get to the Chaos Tunnels without interruption or simply looking forward to being able to trade whatever you like, free trade and the Wilderness will inspire the clan community and shape the game for many years to come.

Clan Spotlight

Each month we will be using this section to showcase a piece of original writing by a member of the clan community.
February's article is by Simon of the Supreme Skillers skilling clan. Here are his thoughts about how the Free Trade/Wilderness update will affect non-PvP clans.

After over a million ‘Yes’ votes, free trade and the Wilderness are returning to RuneScape. How will this affect the game economy after so long?
Mass inflation has hit RuneScape the last few years, resulting in skills getting more and more expensive. Jagex has attempted to regulate some of this by changing the Grand Exchange limits, making new content such as untradable potions and introducing Frost bones, but the return of free trade and the Wilderness will most likely be the update that leads to the biggest changes! The return of the Wilderness doesn’t only affect PKers – it will have an effect on skillers too, because items such as such as potions and food will be more in demand.
The increased demand for these items, such as super sets or cooked sharks, will most likely mean a rise in prices, which could result in increased profit for the people who produce them.
With the return of free trade, people will be able to sell their items for increased profits, but they will also be able to trade their finished products for the raw materials, no matter what the price differences. This could have a great impact on the cost of skills such as Herblore, where players will now be able to trade their finished potions for the unfinished potion and the 2nd ingredients without having to worry about balancing the trade.
Runecrafting may become a main focus. With the return of the Wilderness, runes will be more in demand, which will hopefully put the prices of runes up and make Runecrafting a far more profitable activity.

Player Submissions

Every month, we invite players to submit their own original works for inclusion in the newsletter. This month we've chosen a couple of great pieces with a combat theme.

First up, we hope you'll enjoy this short story from Metamorphist .
The Lone Warrior
Walking through the darkest reaches of the forest, the lone warrior marches on. Though he cannot see, he knows the way. Though he has no signs of his progression, he knows he is progressing. The branches of the dead trees scrape at his armor and grazing his cheeks, the vines at his feet threaten to trip him. But his feet remain sure, as well as his cause. There is no sound except the thumping of his feet, solid against the aged and forgotten path. For days he has wandered, steadfast he remains. Although the future looks grim, he knows what he must do, so with his armor shining and his sword sharp, he marches on.

Next we have this slightly longer piece from Sir 0swyn .
The Clan Warrior
One warrior was left - one warrior versus four. His whole team would tell him to quit so they could start a new game and win. His whole team would tell him that all four opponents were level 138, that they wielded dragon claws, that they all wore matching red party hats.
The warrior just shrugged and smiled.
Feeling powerless with just a godsword, the warrior switched to magic. Ice barrage, on the first freeze, would be effective against claws. There was no chance if the first freeze failed.
He saw two of them charging him from the left, planning to rush him back to his own prison so his teammates could see him die with their own eyes. Who were these soulless demons, these descendants of Zamorak?
Maneuvering behind a tree to gain a second's advantage, the warrior turned on his barrage and stopped to pray for just a moment.
Like strategists who'd practised for this very battle, the twins moved around the tree in opposite directions to pin him in. Unfortunately for them, he was a strategist too. The warrior pretended to be afraid and ran back as fast as his agility could allow him towards the jails, spinning around at the last minute and casting spears of ice.
The spell failed. And the twins didn’t attack. They just waited at opposite diagonals, quick chatting stats and laughing at him in heartless fashion. They enjoyed his pain, and he would make them know how it felt to be alone in this gigantic Clan Wars arena.
The warrior took advantage of their teasing, using this golden-winged opportunity to try the spell a second time. The spell did not fail him again. He continued to farcast them, using a sap curse to drain their defences.
There were only three of these devils left, and he promised his clan that he'd see to their disposal. The clan was tight, and they knew that against all odds, the warrior himself would keep his promise.
Rushing forward to take on the other three, he imagined his clan mates surrounding him. He imagined them all charging forward in the battle together, all of them with a similar goal in mind - to win. And with this extra energy he surged forward until he saw them, equally as chatty as the other two.
Fighting with the element of surprise on his side, the warrior immediately drew his ancient mace and drained one of their prayers. With another swift and agile move, he swung around to face the other two, godsword in hand.
What happened? Did the warrior win? Did the warrior lose?
Just ask me. I was the warrior.

Forum Spotlight

In this new section, we will be showcasing a different noteworthy forum thread each month.
To get the ball rolling, we are picking out a thread by our own Mod Mark H over in the Suggestions section of the forums.

Quick find code: 185-186-452-62245436
Location: Home > RuneScape Forums > Suggestions > Suggest an Emote!

Here is a quote from Mark H about the thread:
"Ever wanted to have your character follow up an Air Guitar with an Air Drum Solo?
Would you like to see your character pull off a Solid Snake and hide under a box?
Or maybe you're a more serious player, you want something to help your Roleplay your Assassin Wizard Vampire character, so want to drop to your knees in angst and cry out a sorrowful "Nooooo!!!"?
Your character can perform some crazy emotes in the world of RuneScape. From turning into a Turkey to doing a pseudo-Thriller dance. There's never a shortage of chances to offer new emotes, but what emotes should they be?
Well, here's your chance to suggest your own emote!
We want to hear your creative ideas for new emotes in RuneScape, whether they are silly or serious."

Why not head on over there and give us your best ideas? You never know - yours might be the one that we choose to add to the game!

Tune in next month when we will be illuminating another thread with the Forum Spotlight.
