Tim sees a role-play.
Tim knows that John's character despises his own character.
Tim joins in.
Tim's character is killed by John's character.
Tim is upset.
Tim makes a thread about how awful John is.
Tim is a cry baby.
Don't be like Tim.

Character consent forced on other people simply wouldn't be an issue if another were to portray their character with a tad common sense as to avoid getting them into situations which would have otherwise compromised the safety of their character and by doing so the person who is trying to attack the other wouldn't Need Out of Character permission from the person beforehand as their character wouldn't have a reason to attack theirs in the first place taking out the need for asking Out of Character permission out entirely.

damn that's a long ass sentence I almost stopped breathing

In all seriousness, the gesture of consent was a nice idea when everyone decided to start using it a couple years back. It soon became ridiculous in the sense that nothing happens and it causes more shit than it should (see: the two Misthalins, the two Kandarins - this is a very basic interpretation of the events, obviously, but it did rule down to an individual not wanting X to happen to their character/creation).

RP is now dictated by asking people to do literally anything. It's lost the spontaneity that kept it fresh, exciting and engaging.

edit: incoming people telling me I'm inherently wrong and consent was the best thing to happen to 42

edit2: Another thing I want to say - honestly, you just shouldn't be so attached to your characters. Every time you RP (especially if it's in a combat scenario), you accept the fact that something bad could happen to your character. That's just the nature of things. RP wars are laughable for this reason - you are guaranteed to see an argument as someone doesn't want to lose their combat-oriented character/soldier. To assert that your soldier would never have his life endangered is ridiculous.

Before anyone says "but rofl attacks in pub" - fighting in a pub is not unheard of, dude. Alcohol releases your inhibitions and if you're predisposed to be aggressive, it may well happen.

Dylan mate if you keep spelling out "world fourty two" i'm going to come up to Scotland and demonstrate my aversion to character consent on you IRL.

Also, I agree with harry. Eli said rp's like your own personal book, but I disagree. What you choose to RP can affect others quite heavily at times; you can't just meander around sectively ignoring everything in the public sphere. The point of the public sphere in the first place is that it's everyone's shared creative outlet, powered by random events and the like.

The argument always was that if you rp'd in public then you consent to the consequences. Irl if someone's running at me with a knife I can't just tell them i exist for a plot, and so I can't be harmed. That's stupid, and it's the attitude that breeds your classic mary sues.

There are plenty of competitive games. Ones I play at that. RSRP isn't one of those.

I was comsidered part of the group of people who fight well, and could win a few tourneys without relying on just being overpowered as hell to pull through.

That circuit of "I am the best at Combat rp" was the single most bile inducing RP circle I was ever around. People threatened to jump off bridges because an OOC referee gave a fight to the other fighter. People would spend two hours arguing a halberd to a light pauldron wouldn't break their collarbone. There was a large emphasis on overtoting physics and statistics, alongside constantly trying to come up with better, "unbeatable" strategies.

It was why I left 42 in the first place. The competitive nature of people who surrounded me at the time made my stomach churn.

If Roleplay is story writing, and you think removing Character Consent or making it competitive makes sense, then think hard on what comes to mind with "Competitive Storywriting." A writing competition. Something like Nanowrimo or the Menaphos contest that just passed. If your goal is to "win" RP then frankly, you aren't thinking in a way that promotes story growth.

As for Finn's (quite excellent I might add) points, how often do people running with knives in the mall happen in real life? I can't speak for outside my New England bubble, but it happens so rarely it makes the news when it does. In 42, this was a near daily occurance. The ratio of "People who could get knifed" and "People who would knife you" is skewed heavily.

Character consent is sficky. I've always sided with the idea that characters in a position of power, or from a naturally powerful race don't get the ability to use it. It's logical anyone who beat you would have a good reason for that killing blow.

I don't use character consent for my characters. The two I sincerely care about playing have the money, expertise, and capability to craft/obtain a sign of life. And wear them. If they die, they come back weak, get whisked off by their jewelry, and have to spend the next few months recovering. Especially if there's broken bones too.

At the same time, I don't believe the consent rule is useless. It's there because a human can't realistically stop a point blank ice barrage or a Mahjarrat with a mastery of fire without being overpowered for a human who just went to get a pint. That's not a knifing in the mall. That's an unrealistic massacre, that shatters any logic to lore.

There is private RP if you want to ignore opposition or make their stories unaffected by the public world.

Having it any other way is a bit selfish. Killing is just another theme. Consider a cult of assassins played by reasonable people; they spend months researching a single target that they must eliminate for their own causes. The moment finally arrives and the target says "sorry nah i didn't consent brother xd'. That's pretty shitty.

We're all here to make stories. What happens in a story when an antagonist blacklists a protagonist, or vice versa?

Put yourself in private if you don't want your story to be influenced by others.
