The tax collectors would have all received an escort of guardsmen at the start of the state of martial law. Though it is unlikely that rabble would attempt to attack very well trained and hardened Calderon men-at-arms, doing so would result in death, no quarter.
Hit me up if you want to try attacking a tax collector.
If every single tax collector in the Kingdom was protected by very well trained and hardened Calderon men-at-arms, then the Army must be stretched real thin. Regardless, those that weren't were targeted for the most part, under the cover of night, and within the woods.
And since we do not fight rofl guards here, we can assume that most of them were successful.
A platoon of soldiers arrived at Callay, picking up a sizeable number of volunteer farmers to assist in harvesting what remains in the fields surrounding Catherby. Then, those same men took the beaten, and worn catherby farmers to Vaterra, where they'd live for a while. Not long after that, the Brigadier had two horses prepared at the castle's stables.
