I have hesitated to create this thread. It's always tricky to raise the issue of things that have occurred in-game, in particular, to raise the issue when it relates to misconduct. However, I believe what has happened is a significant enough breach of our community standards that it necessitates a public response. And I think I'm positioned as well as anyone to do it.
First, a brief bit of background. Many of you were around for land-claims. Many of you were not. There's a mixed set of views on if it hurt the community or helped it, and I've fallen on both sides of it. I'll be honest I still don't entirely know where I fall. However, prior to us as a community getting rid of it and deciding not to bring it back, I served as one of the administrators on the last iteration of the thread.
One of our biggest moments of conflict revolved around a shady land dealing. Someone had handed over Falador from an individual to another clan, which by itself wasn't new. The transition of landed happened often for either ic political reasons or through war or even just inactivity transitioning to new leadership. But this time was different. Accusations were thrown around that a payment of ooc money was used basically to force the ic transfer. Not a bribe just the sale of the "rights" to a city. But that's not how it worked — no one controlled land by some self-given authority. The land was controlled by a shared consent of the community. Landclaims worked (at least until it didn't) because we agreed to recognize the relative neutrality of it and if nothing else the good faith exchanges. That incident hurt that. There was a vote, it was close, and ultimately, the transfer wasn't recognized. You could trace a direct line from that incident to when the landclaims ultimately collapsed. Again, there were merits to having it and to getting rid of it but that's not my point.
