The ports of Hemenster and Witchaven bustled with the movement of sailors and soldiers alike. The docked vessels were re-armed and manned to full capacity, some with an additional brigade of marines in the depths of the ship’s hull. These ships were ready to trade positions with craft forming the imminent blockades. A trade embargo was placed upon the rebellious region of Northmarch, an act at which would be enforced forthwith. Warships in the chilling great blue yonder from Kandarin's Northern had split from their usual patrol paths as soon as news of this uprising usurper had reached their decks. The same was done with those ships found docked in the Port of Ardougne, the warm sparkling waters split with the wide-hulled first rate ship detachments that would sail North to the lands of squalor.

The Ardougne Fleet detachment drifted into their position to maintain a blockade around Northmarch’s port of Catherby only but fifteen hours after they had received word of the usurpation.

Commanded by the HMS Dragon -- a super-heavy 132-gun Ship-of-the-Line -- the small detachment of the Ardougne Fleet prepared a broad chainlink line that would be cast between the HMS Dragon and the beachheads due North-East and North-West of her position just South of Port Catherby. Attempts by any ship to pass in innocence or as a blockade runner would be met with a shredded hull. Three 14-gun sloops -- the HMS Excalibur, HMS Warrior and HMS Albatross -- were positioned as interceptors to chase down and capture smaller vessels, civilian or martial. No ships would be permitted to pass through the blockade. Two 74-gun Ships of-the-Line joined the HMS Dragon in maintaining the line while the HMS Dragon Fire, a small 14-gun naval artillery vessel with two pairs of mortars on its deck remained at standby.

The presence of the Northern Fleet was repositioned from its frosty outpost in the Fremennik Isle to the now-contested warmer waters nearest the Bay of Hemenster. While the fleet's priority was placed with ensuring the security of canal feeding into the bay, regular patrols elsewhere were conducted by the HMS Robin and HMS Swiftness, a pair of 14-gun sloops. These ships ventured precariously close to the river delta that was the boundary between Northmarch and the Fremennik lands. Any ship that dared pass into the contested waters and was spotted by the Kandar naval detachments would find itself halted and boarded, subject to commandeering.

This all happened after Stu's Kharidian vessel docked with Port Catherby, so this may cause issue with Kharid regarding the trapped craft.

Message Alli, Heather, Nick or I about this if needed -- thanks!

As for the trapped ship, Kharidia had a long established trade agreement with all of Kandarin. In their matters of trade, they had fed only Kandar troops - no matter who they had declared for. The Kharidian merchant vessel had acted only in accordance with the alliance and in such it assumed nothing was wrong.

With supplies and personnel dropped off for the merchant mission the boat had intended to leave port, especially with the new arrival of naval forces. The Kharidian Seas Trading Company would not partake in this battle, nor did they want their ship commandeered by the new regime in an effort to attack the blockade. So the Kharidians raised their sails.

They would, of course, assume they were allowed out despite the blockade. Should this not be the case, they would not turn around and they would fight tooth and nail against their attackers.

As the Kharidian vessel rose its sails and made way for the blockade, the Kandar sloops turned starboard to face the craft. Each ship flew the signal flags of Kilo-Lima-Uniform. The broad chains in the waters were blocking the vessel's craft a few hundred meters out in the bay. Considering the trade alliance that Kandarin had with Al-Kharid, they did not want the ship to ram into the heavy lining. The HMS Dragon's crewmen started to rotate a large pulley system on the back of the ship where the chain was attached. The line sunk low beneath the ocean, providing a clear path for the merchant vessel to pass by.

Nonetheless, the two nearest sloops rotated so that their stern faced the bow of the merchant ship. They wanted to meet the craft on portside and starboard, perhaps to board. They stayed within a thirty meter range, certainly within calling distance by voice. The Uniform signal flag had been pulled away, but the two Kilo-Lima flags remained. The captain of the starboard sloop, the HMS Excalibur, called to the captain of the merchant ship.

"Kharidian vessel! State yer' intentions to dock with Port Catherby! If on good terms, ye' will be pardoned!"

The portside sloop, HMS Warrior, continued to sail alongside the merchant ship. The cannons at the deck of either ship were unmanned for the time being, but the ship was crawling with twenty-some sailors each. Five of which on either ship stood by a crossing point with a gangplank and grappling hooks, although they only seemed prepared to board if attacked.

Flags
Kilo: "I wish to communicate with you.
Lima: "Stop immediately."
Uniform: "You are sailing into danger."

..lol

A part of Kandarin isn't Kandarin's land to deal with? Sounds lazy.

As a proud, Kharidian Seas merchant vessel, the ship would pass the blockade without responding to the Kandar's signals. They knew their rights, as per the treaties signed, and obeying Kandarin at sea was in no way one of them. They could trade with whoever they wanted.

As the ship readied to move out into open water, hoisting sail and manoeuvring to steer itself back towards Al Kharid, the ships captain would relay a message of the above feelings in words to the pursuing Kandar ship.

The captain of the HMS Excalibur called back to the captain of the merchant vessel in inquiry,

"What be ye' tradin' with usurpers, sir? If it be no arms then ye' may pass!"

The HMS Warrior continued to sail along at portside, leaving the HMS Excalibur's captain to communicate with the neutral ship.

The merchants would shuffle a little awkwardly around deck, mumbling to each other and evidently caught in some debate. The Kharid imported all manner of things, from food and clothing to weapons and armourments. This trip had been mostly food, yet there had been the odd order or a few resupplys for vendors on-board the ship as well. Everybody knew how famous the Kharid was for its scimitars, and they were a key product in South Kharidian Trading Company vendors all across Kandarin, Camelot being no exclusion.
