The major phone companies in USA have the ability to screen calls. When a telemarketer robocalls, etc. calls, instead of any identifying info on the caller ID, it says, instead, SPAM RISK. Other phone companies say something a little different: Spam Likely, Fraud Risk, Potential Spam, Potential Scam.

I have a landline with an answering machine. For years I've screened my calls by letting the machine answer it. Most, when hearing the message, will hang up. Very few leave a message. If someone wants to leave a message, I'll listen to see who it is...if a telemarketer, I don't pick up. If someone I know, but don't want to talk to right then, I won't pick up, but might call back later.

The one I keep getting is a Lawyer's Office in Utah (I live in Florida) wanting me to call them for an unpaid balance. I have no idea what they are talking about and I'm not about to call Utah.

In my postal mail I keep getting a letter from an auto insurance company that wants me to extend the warranty on a car I traded in 5 years ago.

My Mom quit driving in 2008 and signed over her car to my brother. The car was already 10 years old with high mileage (it was mine before I gave it to her). My brother junked it in 2011. My Mom passed away in 2012. In 2013, she started getting letters in the mail from another auto insurance company wanting her to extend the warranty on this 15 year old car.

EDITED: To change "Potential Spam, Potential Spam" to "Potential Spam, Potential Scam."

We have an answer machine and also caller display. When it says "international out of area" I let the answer machine get it...my husband still often answers those types of call.
I had possible serious health issues late last year so I answered in case it was from any of the people involved with my case. Thankfully I'm fine but now my husband has health problems so again I answer jic its something about his health care. Once I can remember the various phone numbers involved I'll be able to let the answer machine kick in for ones I don't recognise.

edit to add: caller screening is available for an extra fee although I think some telephone companies will do it for free for vulnerable people. I think you can buy a gizmo to do the same thing.

Bullshit Journalism:

It's always been present, of course, but now news outlets seem to make up half their damned stories, it would seem.

"A Palace Aide said ....."

"A close friend is reported as saying ......."

"Sources close to Fred Smith say he's ....."

Well who are these people? If they're not going to give their name then imo they don't actually exist so don't publish the bloody 'story' :@

Plus the extensive use these days of clickbait headlines such as "Possibility of a huge 4th wave of Covid !!!" (for instance) followed by constant use of the words 'might, possibly, could,' etc. peppered with undisclosed sources .... all amounting to a non-story which is a complete fiction just filling space.

I think I'll become a Journo. A Hack. It's obviously piss-easy. My first headline will be:

" Rabid Unicorn Ate My Baby While I Watched Corrie !!!! "

Sources close to Mrs LaFeles state that she doesn't actually watch Corrie so obviously consumed the child herself. She will be sentenced at a later date after psychiatric investigations are completed.

@Inspire you

Again posting comments not fitting this thread. Twice now I've removed posts by you.

Your uncalled for comments about the death of a baby some years ago was uncalled for and the comments you were replying too were taken well out of context.

I just finished 10 days of radiation treatments for spinal cancer. Now I have radiation burns in my esophagus. Not fun...not fun at all. I'm not talking about the feeling of heartburn or acid reflux, I'm talking about the feeling someone has taken sandpaper to my esophagus. Even swallowing my own spit is a painful ordeal. The Doctor gave me medication to swallow before eating that numbs the area (including my lips, tongue and the back of my throat). That's fine, except it starts to wear off in 30 minutes.

"Dermatologically tested" - when written on skincare products.

Well no s--t, Sherlock, of course it is. Just because you know most of your customers are so dumb that they won't know what it means, and will be impressed by the big word.

Mail Order Plants:

Back in November/December and not knowing when the lockdown malarkey would end I decided to order some new plants for the Spring from a mail order company that's been sending me catalogues for years - idk why, I've never ordered anything from them.

Lovely pictures of the plants, glowing descriptions of how they'd enhance your garden, 'top quality' rooted this and that .... yahdey-yah.

Looking to cut down on annual planting schemes I ordered a giant Canna Lily, some perennial fuchsias, a new Hosta variant and various bits and bobs.

Today I received a very small box with a few plastic bags in, containing several sorry-looking bare-rooted items which will take bloody years to mature into anything worth looking at - assuming they survive at all. The roots were all dried up as not even packed in damp peat or wood shavings.

Here's looking at you .... J PARKER GARDEN PLANTS & BULB CO.

Wonces.

When the weather started getting cool, I decided to make sure I was ready when the day came to turn on the furnace. I looked for the extended lighter to light the pilot light. Couldn't find it so I bought another, a package of 3.

1st lighter: I tried to pull the trigger, but it wouldn't budge. I noticed it had a child safety button. I pushed it and the trigger still wouldn't move. I played with that darn thing for 10 minutes, I bet. Finally gave up.

2nd lighter: Pushed the child safety button and pulled the trigger. It lit, but the flame was so small and weak, even the slightest air movement made the flame go out. I turned the flame adjuster, but the flame stayed small and weak.

3rd lighter: Pushed the child safety button, pulled the trigger...nothing. It sparked, but no flame. Tried several times, results the same. I don't think it had any fluid in it at all. I should have taken them back right then and there. But life happens. I got distracted, shoved them in a drawer and all was forgotten.

Time comes to light the pilot, but forgot which one worked and had to go through them again to find the one that worked. Turned the knob on the furnace to light the pilot. I pulled the trigger on the lighter. It lit with the small weak flame. Put it near the gas outlet and the flame went out. I shut off the gas, played with the lighter some more. Finally it lit. Turned the knob for the pilot, put the flame next to the outlet...went out again.

I used to buy one in a package, but occasionally, I'd get one that was defective. Then I started buying 3 to a package. Sometimes one would be defective, but the other two worked. This is the first time where all 3 were defective. I think Quality Control was off that day. ;)
