Did you know, if you emptied all the worlds oceans and then processed them, the resulting block of gold would have enough mass to provide every human on the planet with about 15.5 pounds of the stuff?
The reason why gold has such value is it has been estimated that all through human history only a block roughly the size of the base of the Statue of Liberty has ever been dug up, this sounds like a lot but it is only about 166,500 tonnes. At about $1,203/oz this is estimated to be worth about $8,025,300,000,000 though of course daily price fluctuations are responsible for the price going up and down daily by about 0.1%
In comparison the rarest element on the planet is Francium, there are thought to only be 20 naturally occuring atoms of the stuff on Earth at any one time. One gram of it made in a laboratory might set you back a few billion dollars however it degrades so fast you would never be able to resell it.
