Why does food have to be spicy hot to taste good?

I'm not accustom to eating spicy food. My stomach rebels terribly. If any of it reaches the other end, it's just as hot coming out. So, I have no idea why food has to be spicy to taste good.

I have a few friends who use a lot of different types of hot peppers. One friend says, " The hotter, the better." But none of them can give me a reason why, except "Because it tastes good." To me, its torture, self punishment. Why?

I can make Tex-Mex (Texas-Mexican) and Southwestern food at home, leave out the peppers and it taste just fine.

Another question is this: Infants aren't born accustom to spicy food. So, at what point in a child's life do you give him/her a dish of spicy food and say, "Eat it!" The child complains that it burns and you say, "I said eat it." How do you force a child to eat spicy hot food? I have it envisioned in my mind putting spicy ingredients in the formula. I'm sure that's not true. So, how do you convince a child that food tastes better when it burns your mouth and rectum?

Spicy food is great, but eating something that's hot just because it's hot is stupid. It should be all about the actual taste, and the balance of flavours, not just the heat.

I actually like really hot Indian food, but I get why people dont like it if they have not eaten it much before. For example a Vindaloo is very hot compared to other Indian dishes. I think we collectively call them curries.

But when you go to an Indian restaurant, even if its for a takeaway, you can request it to be mild or medium or hot or very hot... usually.

Even when I eat instant noodles I like to put chilli in it, I think its to mask the bland flavour.

Some people probably just use salt and pepper to flavour their food.

I can't eat spicy food. It wasn't too bad when I was younger, although I never liked anything stronger than mild/medium hot, but now I'm 60+ I can only tolerate a tiny amount of something like chilli in the meal.
edit to add: the rest of my family enjoy spicy food although my 2 sons didn't eat hot curries until they grew up and went to university because I never made them at home..

I think I was peer pressured into eating spicy stuff when I was younger but it got to a point where I just said to myself 'this is overpowering everything else' so now I prefer med/mild. Bob says:

I belonged to an organization and we had a party for the 10 anniversary of the organization. One of the members brought in a cake. He said it was a new recipe he found and asked us to sample it. If we liked it he was going to make one for his brother's birthday. White frosting decorated with green piping. Very beautifully done. The cake had a very slight greenish color with some green specks in it. We thought the green specks were green gummy bears finely chopped. First bite told a different story. The green specks were Jalapeno peppers. He didn't give us any warning. The President of the organization nearly made his membership null and void. A few thought it tasted good with nice texture and sweet. Others, like me, thought it was a very cruel joke, except it wasn't a joke.

No, I don't need help. When I eat food with hot peppers, my stomach does somersaults. I get nausea and sometimes vomit. Have you ever vomited food that had hot peppers in it? Not fun. If I don't vomit, the food goes through and burns just as bad as it did going down.

If I don't need any help at all as long as I stay away from hot peppers...Oh and curry, too.
