I was adapted so for most of my life I did not know much about my birth family. After I got out of the military, I did a little research. The only time someone in my adapted family ever went to the military was when they were drafted or joined in ww2. Out of over a hundred males in that family only 3 were service connected. So they were normal in that aspect (2% of the population are service connected). Despite this, everyone knew I was going to be military from junior high on. (Note, they were almost all farmers so there is a proud tradition there too).
Then I found out about birth family. Both of my parents were service connected (she af, he navy in ww2 and army in korea). Her mother was a WAC, who flew the planes from the manufacturing plants to ports for shipping overseas, relieving men of the duty, so they could go overseas to fight. My mother's father was in the navy in ww2 (career). He had followed his father into the navy.
My father father fought in ww1 and likely met his future wife, a nurse in a group called the Nightingales who were treating the soldiers so close behind the lines that more than one of the nurses was killed by stray bullets or suffered from the gas attacks. His father was army cavalry in wyoming. (As a side note, I should point out my sister (by blood) followed the tradition by being a nurse.)
So my genetic family has been in business of protecting this country for at least 150 years now. My nephew has continued the tradition.
frankly my dear, I couldn't give a dam. never had a river to build one on.
