We all have family. Some of us may still have old parents/grandparents. Not only will they have been through a lot but some may have had a part in second world war. As a result there will be interesting things that have happened in their life and stories to tell.

For example my grandpa is 91 now. Back during the second world war he joined the Merchant Navy.

After the war in 1946 he got a job with a firm that had 2 shops in Handsworth, Birmingham. One of them sold lighting, heating and household electrical equipment. The other one sold radio's, radiograms and radio spares.

One part of the job involved examining the bank of accumulators that were charging at the back of the shop. These were brought in by customers for charging. Once they had reached full charge they were taken off the bank until their owners arrived. Any that were brought in the previous day were topped up and placed on charge. There were also small glass tanks, which sometimes contained more than half a pint of acid! Oftentimes these were taken into the shop by children as young as seven or eight.

There is also my granddad who unfortunately died in 1996. I honestly don't really have any memory of him. One thing I do know is that he was always singing. Most of the time it was opera (he had a great voice). He used to enjoy performing locally. There was even a time that someone approached him and basically said that they were from the BBC. He wasn’t exactly offered a record deal but it definitely could have lead to something. At this point my granddad basically said he wasn’t interested and walked away.

Edit:
Both my grandparents used to smoke a lot. In fact my granddad thought that life wouldn't be worth living if he couldn’t smoke. I’m certain the smoking contributed to the health problems he encountered. Makes me wonder if he would still be here now if he had never smoked.

So that's all from me. Anyone else have any interesting family history?

My mother was a trainee nurse at Guy's Hospital in London in the early 1960s.

She caught tuberculosis from a patient there, and her case was so bad it's still used as a teaching example.

Although she had to leave nursing as a result, the effects of the illness were so strong that when I was born many years later I inherited a natural immunity to TB.

About half a year before I was born my dad was working together with an older co-worker, they had to enter a cable well which happened to have a gas leak. Back then they used live light to see in dark places like that, so when they lit the light the well blew up and my dad suffered massive burns on most of his body. To this day he still has a black tint on his fingers from rubber burnt into his flesh.

My dad would have been 100 this year. He was the mechanic at a flour/animal feed mill where he maintained the lorries. He was there when they started experimenting with making breakfast cereals and saw the start of Jordan's cereals. The mill has an unusual water wheel, which they still used to use every now and again. Instead of the upright type it was on its side. I remember my Dad being very interested when the bearing was replaced. It was made from a very tough wood, I think it was called lignum vitae. That mill is now a heritage site but I think Jordan's cereal is no longer owned by the family that created it.

I was adapted so for most of my life I did not know much about my birth family. After I got out of the military, I did a little research. The only time someone in my adapted family ever went to the military was when they were drafted or joined in ww2. Out of over a hundred males in that family only 3 were service connected. So they were normal in that aspect (2% of the population are service connected). Despite this, everyone knew I was going to be military from junior high on. (Note, they were almost all farmers so there is a proud tradition there too).

Then I found out about birth family. Both of my parents were service connected (she af, he navy in ww2 and army in korea). Her mother was a WAC, who flew the planes from the manufacturing plants to ports for shipping overseas, relieving men of the duty, so they could go overseas to fight. My mother's father was in the navy in ww2 (career). He had followed his father into the navy.

My father father fought in ww1 and likely met his future wife, a nurse in a group called the Nightingales who were treating the soldiers so close behind the lines that more than one of the nurses was killed by stray bullets or suffered from the gas attacks. His father was army cavalry in wyoming. (As a side note, I should point out my sister (by blood) followed the tradition by being a nurse.)

So my genetic family has been in business of protecting this country for at least 150 years now. My nephew has continued the tradition.

My father's side of the family managed to escape the Nazi regime in Austria and came to Canada. I still find various paperwork (birth certificates, adoption papers, etc.) with swastikas on them when going through filing cabinets of old documents.

Hope you are saving them or donating to a museum. If we do not learn from the mistakes of the past, we are doomed to repeat them. frankly my dear, I couldn't give a dam. never had a river to build one on.

Absolutely. I'm not the type of person to simply destroy historical documents simply because some people might find them offensive because they have certain symbols on them. I will probably end up selling the various Hitler stamps to a philatelist who can appreciate them at some point, but for now, I'll keep keep everything put away here until such time.

History is important. Even the history that makes us feel uncomfortable.

My thoughts exactly! You can't erase history. But you can learn from it.
