We keep the landline because we're a small village and not a high priority when the mobile mast goes wrong. We were without a signal for 10 days a couple of years ago.
We have a phone on the landline that screens calls. If the number isn't in the inbuilt phone book the caller has to say who they are and press a key ( I think its # ). The call will then be put through and we can accept or reject it. They can leave a message if we're not there. This means that no automated computer calls get through, its wonderful. The phone will show all the calls and we can check the number or it will say it was witheld or unavailable. We used to get a lot of missed calls, sometimes several in a single day, but now its maybe one or two a week. I think the scammers are getting the message the call won't get through.
