Fortunately, yes. Lots of relatives to farm the kids out to while I did my 3 jobs (early morning Cleaner - kitchen assistant - Evening Cleaner .... ahhh! the glamour of it).

I was also lucky that it was a time of huge and rapid social change here and after about 5 years of living hand-to-mouth I got a 'proper' job. Only as a Secretary but it was full time, in one place, and paid enough that I didn't rely on the Pity Parcels of food from more affluent family members.

It's funny how such experiences change you - I'm now a bit of a hoarder (of food) with a siege mentality, rarely by choice buy anything brand new and even now squirrel away money 'in case of a rainy day'.

There are times when I cuss and roll my eyes at, and because of, my extended family but I think the value of blood ties should never be under-estimated. A lot of families these days seem so much more .... fractured.

Haha yes, 3 jobs are a lot to juggle and doing it while juggling kid's schedules? Props to you for doing it!

I assumed that was what it was about and actually wrote something else then realized I was just projecting my assumption onto you instead of actually reading what you wrote so I deleted it.

Your perception is valid and is the truth as well. I believe in lifting everyone up and to do that, we need to address issues for all sides. It is specifically why I addressed the male side of it before, but that perception is only secondhand from my own husband and male relatives/friends. I obviously don't live the life of a male, so all I have is secondhand knowledge. And I swear I'm not going to let her know all the pain I have known

Don't worry, technology will soon render childcare obsolete.

I work for an IVF startup that's trying to replace childbirth with amniotic pods and synthetic umbilical cords that provide nourishment until the fetus is approximately 5 years old, by which time it will be ready to start kindergarten. So far only the cloned brains have succeeded in transferring innate knowledge to our little Athenas but the scientists assure me that brainwave inculcation therapy is just around the corner.

It's hard to believe but apparently there is a long list of wealthy clientele, Chinese especially, who want a hassle-free designer child.
