To be fair, Naruto is one of the gateway shows that got people into anime. I can only wonder what 12 year old me saw in it, but it planted the seed in my mind.
Going back to the TTGL discussion a few pages back...why do people think that show was good? Simon and Rossiu are the only characters who get any real development, and Rossiu's only comes in the second half. Yoko is nothing more than eye candy designed to hook 13 year old boys going through *******. Kamina was an over-the-top caricature, although he was killed off unexpectedly (a plus, in my opinion).
Almost every character is one dimensional and annoying, so I was kinda glad when they started dying off towards the end. I didn't even know their names, so it was hard to feel bad or be inspired by their noble sacrifices. Having the borderline reetarded characters occupying government positions reeked of nepotism and was a stupid plot point.
And then there's the plot. The audience is expected to suspend their disbelief while watching humanity's inexorable march onward, first to defeat the oppressive ruler and then to defeat the even Bigger Bad, who the misunderstood tyrant was actually protecting us from. In the span of approximately 10 years, people go from digging with stone tools to fighting with giant robots on a galactic scale. Bizarre theoretical physics? No problem, we'll just come up with a balls to the wall solution.
It's my understanding that Simon and the girl (I don't even know her name, she was so unmemorable) were based on Shinji and Rei from NGE. Both just came across as, well, inferior copies. The battles towards the end were cool, but I was never invested in any of the characters. It was always a question of how the good guys were going to win seeing as they never lost a battle.
