Since a lot of controversial topics are being touched upon in these forums, including gender and transvestism, I'm thinking of looking into Ouran High School Host Club. I hear that it has one of the top 10 fathers in it and it involves a girl going to a boys' school to pay off a big loan. Prepare for hell on RuneScape in Naval Cataclysm!

You're slightly off in your synopsis, but either way I wouldn't describe Ouran as a progressive anime. Patrolling Lore FC almost makes you wish for a Great Revision.

Hourou Musuko might be the only anime that deals with gender identity that I could recommend, off of the top of my head. I don't really recall any others.

On another note. I really wish someone would either recreate this thread or update the opening post. Its brokenness agitates me.

I'de sooner reccomend the manga over the anime though. Anime version had some pretty weird choices regarding the timeline of the story.

But yeah, HM is the only real work I've ever seen that properly deals with TG themes in a serious context. There are plenty of series that have traps, and a few that do dabble in proper TG themes on the odd occasion rather than 'boy has to dress as girl becasue reasons', but it's mostly all for the sake of wacky hijinks.

In other news, rewatching Kami-sama no Inai Nichiyobi. I'de forgotten how much I like this show.

I bought the Simoun DVDs like 3 years ago and still haven't watched them. Typically I only buy anime I've already seen and I deem it worthy enough for a physical copy. But alas it was on sale and I'd head good things about it.... I'll get to it one of these days.
