So I've been craving anime lately and trying to finish all those shows I started and never quite finished. Working on Black Bullet at the moment after leaving it at episode 4, writing still sucks.

@Trap:

I've seen Zetsubo-sensei. All I can remember about it was that it was pretty funny at times and I finished it pretty quickly (within a day or two, usually a good sign).As far as I can recall there was no real plot, it's just a randomish kinda downer comedy (that's great for taking screenshots of and then posting them online, you have no idea how much use I've gotten out of one that says 'the internet has left me in despair'). It's another Akiyuki Shinbo/SHAFT show (Madoka, Bakemonogatari, Hidamari Sketch, Nisekoi etc), so I imagine that sums it up quite a bit alone.

Even though I like lolis, I didn't like Black Bullet. It was okay for the first two episodes I guess, and then around episode four or five, I dropped it. I just didn't get into it.

I like Monogatari and Madoka was decent. I've not watched the other mentioned shows though, is it worth watching those too?

Zetsubo-sensei only sounded interesting because of the description of the first episode, but if it's not got much of a plot, then I might have to put it to the far back of my list.

I've surprised myself lately by watching a whole lot of stuff I otherwise wouldn't have touched because I know full well it's awful, this is either the second coming of 'new fan syndrome' or I'm just really starved for entertainment lately. I don't exactly like Black Bullet either (the fact that I felt the need to mention it only to rag on it's bad writing says enough), I think we all concluded way back when that it wasn't very good and that that Enju (and subsequently Tina) were the only real reason to watch it. I only need one good reason though, I've gotten through much worse (Heavens Lost Property, for example) with less. Sides, I like the ED.

As for the other shows, cant really speak for Nisekoi. Alot of the blogs I frequent were covering it, so clearly someone out there likes it, but I wasn't very taken with it and dropped it after a couple of episodes purely because I didn't find it interesting. Far to 'normal' for the SHAFT/Shinbo combo.

Hidamari Sketch on the other hand I really like. It's simple, cute and funny, though if the idea of Zetsubo-sensei not having a plot dissuades you from watching that then this might not be up your alley either, because it doesn't have one either. It's a Slice of Life/Comedy/'cute girls doing cute things' series based on a 4-koma manga, so although there is time progression (technically, since it can be summer, then christmas, then some other random time of year in the same episode) there is nothing in the way of plot.

Shinbo tends to have about a 50/50 success rate as far as I'm concerned. He's been at the helm of several series I adore or were influential to my early anime viewing 'career', but also got a whole lot of 'meh' to his credit as well...

Also, random thought: Only once you write a manga with a female protagonist will you realize how much of a per-vert you are.

I don't mind shows that have very little plot. Like YuruYuri, Non Non Biyori and a few others that I can remember but not recall their names. So, I'll give Hidamari Sketch a chance.

I tend to prefer series where the main protagonist is female. I think anime has a hard time creating interesting male characters.

Ah, well if you like them then you probably will like Hidamari then, it's in the same vein of thinking only with a whole lot of Shinbo's characteristic visual styling.

But yeah, cant say I disagree with your assessment. With the exception of more mature or intellectual (including pseudo-intellectual) titles, it does often seem that the male characters are created only to serve as a delivery platform for the far more interesting female ones, even outside the obvious harem merchandising machines. Of course, marketing and merchandising plays a huge part in that, but it's also seems a lot harder to visually diversify male characters and give them a unique identity both within and without their own series.

At least, that's my experience as a storyteller anyway. In a strictly written medium I don't have any particular gender preference and mostly go for male characters because I find it easier to project a male character into the circumstances I typically like to write about, but when it goes to a semi or fully visual medium I always end up going for girls because they are easier to communicate character traits with visually.

The main male character has to be boring with little to no redeeming qualities. The anime industry has to feed the loser Otaku fans by giving them characters to self identify with. Then they can feed their egos by making the character inexplicably popular with girls and/or have some super kool hidden power.
