I've never been much of a fan of the Fate series, not even F/Z. Illya was easily the worst of the series though. I managed to finish it since it was only 10 episodes, which I only had to bear once per week as it was airing. I'll probably pass on the second season. I'll be watching the new F/SN though.

With Sailor Moon Crystal out now, I'm back to trying to finish the original Sailor Moon. I've made it through 143 episodes, 57 more to go... The characters are fun to watch, but the story really tests my suspension of disbelief. Maybe that's why it's taken me like 2 years to watch this far. Objectively it's pretty horrible, most magical girl anime are.

I don't think I've watched many magical girl series. I only watched Prisma Illya because it was related to the Fate series and Illyasviel has always been one of my favourite characters.

I am constantly getting recommended Puella Magi Madoka Magica and have never gotten round to watching it.

I do however remember watching most of Sailor Moon but that was ages and ages ago. I'm not sure if I'll watch the new one. How is the newer one? Is it similar to the original?

If you're asking me about the new Sailor Moon, I haven't watched it yet. I'm trying to finish off the original series before I do. But I can't really say that I like the new cast, I wish the original VAs would've returned. Usagi's transformation scene looks really ugly in Crystal though. You can watch the comparison on Youtube. The new character designs definitely have a more typical shoujo look, which I'm indifferent to.

Madoka Magica is good, watch it.

And do NOT look up any spoilers, not even a plot summary. It's a much better show if you have no idea what it's about (and indeed, all of it's advertising prior to release was tailored to deceive). Once your done with the series, skip ahead to the third movie (the first two are recaps). There's a reason it's the second best selling anime of all time.

After that, Lyrical Nanoha, for at least the first two seasons of it anyway. Far more othodox magical girl series than Madoka (though with similar levels of bad-assery), same director though and all things considered pretty entertaining. I think that about rounds out the supply of 'magical girl series actually written for men'.

Madoka is the better series, but it might be worth watching Nanoha first. Reason I say that is that Madoka is very genre deconstructive, so getting some more orthodox magical girl under your belt might make it easier to appreciate when Madoka doesn't play by the rules.

Oddly enough I haven't watched Nanoha, so I don't think it matters. I've seen quite a few other magical girl anime though. But yes I do suppose it would be a little better to have at least some experience in the genre before Madoka.

Are there many other good magical girl anime? As far as I am aware there is a fair amount of it, but most of it is junk?

Cardcaptor Sakura is pretty good.

I wouldn't say it's all junk, it's just not something suited to my tastes. It's directed more towards a female audience, as girls can identify with the characters and feel "empowered" by them or so they say... I see your avatar is a female, but whether you are in real life I haven't a clue. So, yeah.
