To start off, I am a parent to one child. I was childfree for a long time as I raised my niece when I was a teenager and I was all too aware of what raising a child was like. For a multitude of reasons , I obviously changed my mind. And, although I personally enjoy being a parent, I can definitely see why people don't have kids - even if they like kids.

I do believe that there is a strong gender component where one gender is pressured to both have kids and have all the child-rearing responsibilities, I won't center my thread about that. Instead, I would like to hear your opinions about the childfree lifestyle. Is it good? Bad? Are they selfish? Smart? What do you think?
And I swear I'm not going to let her know all the pain I have known

What works for one person, doesn't necessarily work for another.

I don't think that those who are voluntarily child free should be judged in any way.

Most of my childhood and teen friends that I stayed in contact with don't have children; they all have dogs and some have other types of pets.

All to their own.

I feel it's more selfish to have children and not treat them well.

I never understood why people think NOT having kids is selfish. I can't think of anything more selfish than to have children. What reason do you have for making another person, really? Is there a logical reason? Is there even a good reason? No. There isn't. It's as irrational as being angry at the colour of the sky. It's just something people do.

Pros of not having kids:

- Free time
- Can do what you want, when you want
- Can do the above without excessive amounts of planning
- Have more disposable income
- Not responsible for someone's life
- Can live anywhere
- Time spent not dictated by kids

Cons of not having kids:

- People call you names, mostly just call you selfish tho
- People judge you
- Always being asked WHEN not IF
- None really????
- Not having kids, I guess? If you're someone who really wants them.

I think there are pros and cons to every situation. And having children, or even not having any, isn't for everyone.

Pros of having kids:

- You are a teacher
- You are a superhero
- You are a leader
- Someone to hang out with
- Show them de wae

Cons of having kids:

- Education hoops
- Medical hoops
- Social hoops
- Responsible for another life
- ???? Always a bad parent no matter what ???
- Kid ends up not being a retirement plan like ur parents said they would
- PLANNING, planning, planning, pLaNnInG

Overall I have some very strong opinions on having children, and if you can't tell from the overall tone of this post, I'm childfree myself. We need to ditch a lot of the older mentalities surrounding kids and what they can do for us. Ask not what your children can do for you, but what you can do for your children, blah blah blah. I guess economically it's smarter to not have children, but it doesn't really matter at the end of the day. Happiness matters imo.

As a side note,
International Childfree Day is August 1st.

They are, which is crazy. I also just recently read an article that addresses the consequences of the childfree lifestyle on the economy. Admittedly, it wasn't the link below, but I don't remember the origia link. In any case, it was similar to the link below.

That is about as extreme as saying that childfree people are selfish, imo. After all, criminals who make extremely selfish decisions would obviously be more selfish not to mention that there are a lot of reasons to have children.

For instance, a nonselfish reason to have a child is so the child has a chance to enjoy existing. Of course, no other person can say whether or not someone else likes existing, but that person can change their mind later if they want to - they can't change their mind if they were not born.

However, I do agree that we need to ditch the older mentality of judging people based on their reproductive choices.

Existence is subjective. There is no right or wrong answer for that, really.

I would disagree with the 'enjoying' existence statement you have, but again, it's subjective. It doesn't really matter at the end of the day, is the point I was making there. People are going to make their choices regardless of our opinions.

If people want to think I'm selfish for not reproducing, then it's whatever. Whatever helps them sleep at night, I guess.

100% agreed brigantia.

for many people the reason to not have children is so their children dont suffer like you have. (aka far from being selfish) whether thats a genetic disorder or living situations. they dont want to bring a child into the world knowing there is a high possibility that they wont be happy for a number of reasons.

i can say that for me is one of the biggest reasons i dont wish to have children is because i know it will most likely have to deal with many things that are a huge struggle that were for me. and i dont wish to bring a tiny person into the world that would have to deal with them too.

I just except peoples choices either way. But I can think of more selfish reasons to have children than not. Remember Caz. Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
