Gen 3 Torkoal in the works. Going for a mixed set, something like:

Curse
Body Slam/Return
Fire Blast/Flamethrower/Heat Wave/etc.
Explosion

Question is, do I go all in for physical defense with a relaxed nature, or try to round off special defense with a sassy nature? Patrolling Lore FC almost makes you wish for a Great Revision.

I'd go for Sp.Def, personally. It can also use Amnesia and Rock Slide.

Speaking of Gen 3, I had to use two X Defends against Norman on my Sapphire speedrun route which I'm planning out still. Bit wimpy of me, I know. Prepare for hell on RuneScape in Naval Cataclysm!

If you're going for competitive, you're going to want Relaxed- you have 2 physical weaknesses vs 1 special.

I was going to say switch out Body Slam/Return with EQ, but then I remembered it doesn't get EQ until gen 4... That reminds me, a Sassy Torkoal will have at least 285 Defence at level 100, and that's at 0 Defence IVs, and up to 262 Sp.Def. Meanwhile a Relaxed one will have 313 Defence and up to 239 Sp.Def. What I was thinking was max out HP and Sp.Def, or at least max out one of those and spend most on the other while the rest goes to Sp.Atk. Curse will boost Attack power, so that leaves Sp.Atk left.

As for Explosion, I personally wouldn't use that. It's just that I tend to go for stability and protection over kamikaze tactics, so I'm reluctant to even use recoil moves. I see that Emerald tutors can teach it Rock Slide and Mud Slap though, and Mud Slap is good for scummy tactics. It can also learn Sludge Bomb and Iron Tail. Prepare for hell on RuneScape in Naval Cataclysm!

I went with sassy, since 1) not going for competitive, and 2) I'm already using a Defense-boosting move with Curse. Also, Explosion is awesome. Torkoalhu akbar!
