I use to love swimming but four years ago I developed Scoliosis (curvature of the spine) so my left side of my back sticks out and I hate the look of it, so this has stopped me from attending public swimming pools. I'm thinking about going again soon though as it's a really good form of exercise and I shouldn't let the look of my back stop me I suppose :)

Whew, some good advice here, but I am so happy to see this thread!!

I have been swimming competitively since I was 4, and I am a fitness junkie but swimming is my specialty.

Please please message me in game if you have the chance, I would love so much to help out here, and I would absolutely love to share my knowledge.

Swimming is the best form of cardio you can do, there is no risk of impact on your joints as experienced in running, and water has many qualities that have yet to have been studied that have proven to be very beneficial on mind as well as body.

I saw a post about the chlorine and something to do with germans and WW2...don't worry about that, it is not going to hurt you unless you drink the pool water.. and it would have to a huge amount of it.

I read that breastroke is your favorite, and it just so happens that was my expertise, I went to states in the 100 meter breastroke, finis*hin* at about 1.05.23 .

I absolutely love swimming and I would love to coach you the best that I can. I would need more information, but definitely be assured that swimming is a great way to stay in shape, and is extremely therapeutic. Water has many qualities that we have yet to fully understand, all of which positive.

I would love to go into more detail, based on your own goals, as far as mechanics, how many laps you should shoot for, etc.

I'll try to at least start you with something, swimming laps I would say that you should first perfect freestyle.

There are certain kick patterns used, I would say the best is about 6-8 kicks per stroke, but obviously start with whatever feels comfortable to you. The way to progress, is pushing a little bit past what you're comfortable with.

The stroke part, upper body part, needs to be a side to side momentum, like as you pull with one arm, you want to ride that force on the opposite side of your body, it is side to side, to experience less drag, and therefore you exert less energy. Search for videos on this, and really try to replicate that. It's like you're listening to a click like a musician, there is certainly rhythm involved. You take a stroke with one arm and you ride the force sideways in the water and then repeat on the other side. Shoulder to shoulder.

Sorry, somehow it posted the same thing twice and I don't see where I can delete this.

At the very least I'll add a little bit to the previous post.

I saw people trying to say you should use fins and paddles, that's not for the casual swimmer. Don't worry about those, but I will tell you the purpose of such.

It exaggerates certain key movements in your stroke that generate the most power, and they are more for the competitive swimmer, but you don't "need" them at all.

I would say ride each stroke to its fullest extent before you take the next stroke. Practice riding that force on your side, and then roll to the other side to take your next stroke. A very very good drill is to do laps with the least amount of strokes that you can manage. Again though, if you aren't comfortable with that, don't do it. The first thing to implement is swimming with a shoulder roll, cutting through the water. Eventually you don't need to exaggerate it so much, just watch videos, michael phelps doing freestyle has a "1 2" sort of rhythm, and that is the speeded up version of what I'm trying to explain.

Thanks I'll keep that in mind if I need help, the laps is something I've been doing, sometimes when I went I've done 20 laps, other times 3-5 if I do laps, they're quite good, might try that breaststroke method you mentioned where you do one arm at a time, I've been doing it with both, also I'm rather good with kicks having done some laps where I kick the whole way :D .

In real life next week, my gym membership is going to be upgraded (right now it lets me use the gym) to let me use swimming baths and saunas in my area, and I'm planning to start going once or twice a week, made this thread to find out if anyone else is interested in swimming :D .

Myself I've always loved it for the fact that it trains multiple muscles of your body - Biceps, triceps, shoulders, front (Pecs/abs) and the legs all get a workout plus it improves stamina and relaxes you.

I cannot comprehend of how much I love the feeling of swimming, it's just an overall great feeling.
