Many, if not all, UK hospitals would welcome your voluntary work at week ends only. You may have no choice in the work you do but all will be a positive experience and good for your CV/Resume.

I did look at the Cambridge hospital and they were only taking on volunteers who were studying nursing/to be a doctor. I'm a civil engineer so wasn't suited for me. :(

Success is not final, failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts.

This thread means a lot to me.

Averia Light, you are a very strong person to even create something like this! It's much appreciated it.

I hope that you can find some time for yourself, and I hope that you can relax.

While I do not want to go into details about my experience with it... the only insights I can offer are: anger solves nothing; repeating the same conversations is OK (even if it's annoying); being there for them, and having patience is a blessing; and having tons of laughter is great.

Thank you.

Hey, I'm not a particularly strong person, just wanted to make a thread about my experience so maybe other people can be prepared for what happens after an Alzheimer's diagnosis.

Also, you don't have to tell your story. And, yes, a lot of people get frustrated, but they are still in there even if they are expressing their feelings and wants in another time period with another person if that makes sense. Just have to meet them in their reality to help them get through the actual reality if that makes sense. If they express fear, then acknowledge that fear and say it is ok, even if it doesn't make sense. It seems to help a lot.

And, today marks my last visit until another group visit is planned. She did something peculiar today though. She just randomly started kissing my head and said "you know I love you". And, for a second, I knew it was her in today's world if that makes sense. I think she was telling me it was okay.
And I swear I'm not going to let her know all the pain I have known

I'm sure your grandpa would be proud of who you are now regardless of if you volunteer or not. :)

I hate to break it to you but cooking with aluminium or injesting large amounts of aluminium is a direct cause of Alzheimer's disease

Lets not go scaremongering.

Alzheimer's Society
In 1965, researchers found that rabbits injected with an extremely high dose of aluminium developed toxic tau tangles in their brains. This led to speculation that aluminium from cans, cookware, processed foods and even the water supply could be causing dementia.

Importantly , these results were only seen with extremely high exposures that far exceed the levels that can enter the body through food or potentially through contact with aluminium cookware.

Since this study was reported, much research has been done on the relationship of aluminium and Alzheimer's disease. As yet no study or group of studies has been able to confirm that aluminium is involved in the development of Alzheimer's disease.

And yet the use of aluminium pots and pans decline. Not because of the cost of aluminium but because it is regarded as a poison when injested in large amounts.

Maybe because of misinformation such as ....

And the official information such as ....

seems to get quietly avoided attention and/or dismissed.

It would be interesting to see a citation for "use of aluminium pots and pans decline" but lets not forget microwave cooking, ceramic use and glass technology have made massive inroads into cooking techniques over recent years. Strange that the increased cost factor of aluminium can be dismissed so easily to fit an agenda.
