If you're looking to buy a phat or some other rare, and you're a first time buyer, you're probably wondering how to figure out a fair price to pay.

You're most likely aware that there is
rampant price manipulation
on price check threads and bots, but as most of the information about the
real
price of rares is hidden behind the iron curtain of the rare merching community, you perhaps feel unsure whether or not you're being ripped off.

So here's a general guide on how to buy a rare over max cash and get a
fair
deal.

Step 1

First thing you're gonna want to do is message every single mercher selling the rare you want to buy. Make offers, ask for offers, haggle with them to see how low you can get them to go. You want to commit at least a few days to this. After a while you'll get an indication of what the lowest price a mercher is gonna give you...
This is the upper range of the real price.
Remeber, merchers are trying to make money, they sell at the upper range, not lower.

Step 2

Now you've figured out the upper range of the
real price
(which you have probably realised is significantly lower than the trades posted on price check threads) you want to knock off about 5-10% to find the lower range.

Step 3

Now you've found the lower and upper range, you're gonna want to make a forum post, stating the price you want to pay in the title, whether that be on the high/mid/low end of the range.
It's important to put the price in the title
, because if you're offering a reasonable price between the mid to high range, you're likely offering more than most merchers will pay.

Step 4

Wait until a non mercher who is looking to sell their rare contacts you. This might take a week or 2, but rares are rare. they arent traded often.

Nice, I think this is pretty good information honestly. You definitely need to be patient, and hopefully a little savvy when it comes to noticing trends (especially among certain groups of players) of dishonest or intentionally misleading pricing.

What the actual shit I just read?? This post has literally no logic... You think prices are just taken out of somewhere? Prices are determined by supply and demand. When there is more demand then price obviously go up because why would anyone sell for cheap if there are tons of buyers who are willing to pay the price you are asking? Ofc you are trying to get the best money out of it. Naturally when the demand is lower and supply is higher on the market, ppl are getting more impatient and sell for lower and lower -> making prices drop.

With your logic all the shopkeepers should sell their stock in general stores for the same price they bought it in, right? How you think any shops can hold their business without any profits? Merching is a normal way to make money which has probably happened since 2001 when Rs classic came and first rares being released. Mercher is a guy who is spending hours, days or weeks waiting for a good deal to sell his buy for higher to make money. Is there anything wrong with that? Anyone can go there and wait days to get best deal, which obviously most of the ppl are doing. Then are some impatient ppl who just pay the price what some Mercer is asking. There is nothing wrong with that either. You are giving lots of misinformation about price guidance.
For example if you need a TV and you are not willing to pay the prices shopkeeper is asking. Will you go there everyday whining about prices and hoping to get one for -20% lower? Maybe if you continue doing it for weeks shopkeeper will get pissed with you and give you discount to get rid off you. Are you feeling victorious after that or are you just an asshole?

Always some poor ppl have been whining that price is too high and can't afford it blah blah blah.. With your logic all lower rares(Santas, masks, etc.) are priced for max cash because everyday they go through ge -> that must be the real price, just be patient and wait for weeks it to fill.

Im not a mercher. I don't even own a single rare in this game currently. I have been in this game for so long I have seen tons of poor ppl whining about the prices every now and then. That phenomenon makes me facepalm so hard..

Then how on earth would you have any insight on whether there is manipulation occurring in rare trading if you dont even spend countless of hours in w2 trading those rares?

So merchant is a shopkeeper now. What stops the person seeking to buy rare from buying the rare from someone else for the same price the mercher got his? You see, thats the whole point of the thread that with patience you can actually get the rare you are seeking for the same price as the merchers but seemingly this was very hard point for you to understand.

Sounds like great advice to get a fair deal on rares. It isn't trying to lower the prices, rather just to make sure that people know what they are getting themselves into when attempting to purchase one for the first time.

We all know merchanting is a part of the game, but that shouldn't mean that they hold a monopoly on everything.

Great guide.

Thanks for this guide. I'm a noob and I'm just absolutely disheartened by the trading and rare scene.

This guide makes a lot of sense!

What does everyone think about making Jagex increase the limit on GE to combat this off-game trading?

Hell make another GE instance for items above max cash Actually this is a bad idea I'd rather have other updates :P
