I sold my last yellow pretty low, before the latest phat rise, but I expected phats to rise. So, why did I do it?
Because I wanted to put in max offers. Which did fill. If more fill, I'll have made a killing.
Items are always changing in value. You profit by figuring which will rise and holding when those items do rise. It is difficult to figure. It's also difficult to guess which items will sell in the ge.

But back to the original topic:
If I type a buy offer for a yellow at 30b, I might, in a sense, wait months. Maybe that buy never fills. Others might type in a sell offer on a yellow at 40b. Maybe those never fill either. If no one moves their offers, yellow might never again trade, ever, in runescape.
But someone always moves his offer. One side always caves, eventually.
It is not a scam to wait for a higher price, or to offer a low price. And if a price estimate is given, that estimate might be honest but wrong. Furthermore, prices change.

@raphtalia
Fair point raised about the changability of prices, it does happen and I'm glad you mentioned it.
My response to this would be that rare prices steadily increase over time (a long time) with moderate short term fluctuations. No one really knows which way it's going, but manipulators will try and have you think it's trending upwards to make you panic buy, or trending downwards to make you panic sell. In short, it always pays to be patient, and if the person you're trading with is trying to convince you the market is going a certain way, ignore whatever the **** they're saying and find a different person to trade with
@trip
Various fair points raised, the essence of it being (correct me if I'm wrong) not all merchers are manipulators, be patient, markets change, be prepared to negotiate.
I agree with more or less everything you said, at the end of the day, merchers gonna merch. Maybe my post came off as a bit of an attack on the merch community. My only real beef is with a handful of people that are actively trying to manipulate the market.
No worries, but keep in mind there is a sort of scam where a merchant claims to be a nonmerchant. He'll then try to do something unscrupulous while insisting those calling him out on it are but "merchants."
So, while it's good to encourage wariness, we really don't need more anger at "merchants."
Gem sacks, until recently, were extremely rare, are still very rare. But no one wants them. I've had people ask me their value, but I dunno their value. Because usually none of the sellers will sell for a price buyers will pay. So, they just don't trade. No one seems to realise just how rare some items are. However, again, the gem item doesn't seem to be as rare this year as it appeared to be last year. There was like one gem sack that traded back and forth, last year, until I bought it. Then, they were just gone. This year, several have traded.
I expect phats could find themselves in a similar situation, one day. Whether certain trades are real or not, some items just don't have prices. Too many get angry in this game when I think it's actually extremely interesting and fun to experience a fantasy economy like we have. People miss the best part of runescape, the economy, though perhaps it's not as alive as when gp was worth more, rares worth less in gp, and rares more common.

An example though of when "calling out the scammers" led to an actual scam:
When phats fell earlier this year, some real buys were reported that were much lower than previous buys. They were dismissed as fake, but they were real.
So, "fighting the scammers" led to an actual scam, in a sense.

Step 5: Be wary of people who like to act normal on their mains but on their alts they may post fake trades/ have shard scammers at world 2/may be lurers and much more. They may have accounts for death threats/flaming too. When trading all items over max cash be wary of all these details.

To explain the above post more clearly, people will use different behaviors on each account.
This is known as multiple personality disorder or Narcissistic personality disorder.
One merchant was hated, so someone used alts to spam others with. Those others were told the alts were owned by the hated merchant, but they were owned by a different person.
Merch wars
So, you might be right to be angry/annoyed at someone, but you might be mistaken about just whom you should be angry at.

Over max trades, on tokens a well as rares, are suspicious.
Also, trades on items that don't trade in the ge, like 2015 beach tokens, are suspicious. But players will also actually trade with legitimate volatility. If I have phoebes, and I want to sell, who's going to buy all I have? Similarly, if someone wants to buy phoebes, who's going to sell to him? The volatility can be real but can also be fake.
Ge trades can be faked, but out-of-ge trades are much less reliable.
