Im not a mercher. I don't even own a single rare in this game currently. I have been in this game for so long I have seen tons of poor ppl whining about the prices every now and then. That phenomenon makes me facepalm so hard..
I see that you have a forum post history of buying/selling items so that would make you a mercher.
Don't worry non mercher here too.
Edit: You also told everyone to stay away from high value tokens in sof/th item status v15
. This makes you a bit biased

nice information. it doesnt always work the same but this is the closest it could get.
to that person on page 1 who is not a mercher, what about your main account?.
back on topic,
it doesnt always go the same way because when prices change so do the ranges and the limits so if today a chocolate bare is 5 gp, tomorrow it could be 6 or 4 gp and the day after it could be 8 or 9 gp.
if you need 2 weeks to find a buy or sell and in that timespan the prices change because other ppl sell or buy it. then the prices change and you might not get the price you wanted, or you get alot more than the price you wanted. depending on what the ppl around you sell or buy it for. ofcourse this depends on the amount of trades within that items section.
if the above doesnt make sense then just skip it but i think this is important too.
trusting certain pc lists or prices of items or websites that dont belong to jagex will get you into trouble notice: external websites and trades are your responsibility, dont get fooled!.

Then how on earth would you have any insight on whether there is manipulation occurring in rare trading if you dont even spend countless of hours in w2 trading those rares?
So merchant is a shopkeeper now. What stops the person seeking to buy rare from buying the rare from someone else for the same price the mercher got his? You see, thats the whole point of the thread that with patience you can actually get the rare you are seeking for the same price as the merchers but seemingly this was very hard point for you to understand.
I was commenting there is no logic in OP's price guidance... Lowest price is now the upper range of real price LMFAO

So here's a general guide on how to buy a rare over max cash and get a
fair
deal.
...After a while you'll get an indication of what the lowest price a mercher is gonna give you...
This is the upper range of the real price.
Step 2
Now you've figured out the upper range of the
real price
...you want to knock off about 5-10% to find the lower range.
Wait until a non mercher who is looking to sell their rare contacts you. This might take a week o

...Anyone can go there and wait days to get best deal, which obviously most of the ppl are doing...
I don't know why more people don't take my stance on refusing to touch the rares market given the amount of manipulation, toxicity and pure cancer there is on w2 tbh.
That said, can't say I learnt anything new from this thread but regardless, it's a nice post and rather well structured for people of lesser experience dealing with items above max cash for the first time.
Raph does make a good point so fingers crossed, if you're one of the lesser experienced players dealing with these items for the first time, I hope you can guage the price asap before the next manip wave comes along
Good job OP on this thread
Edit - @ kiluj, just get on your main man. Why does everybody in ID that wants to complain or manip hide behind their alts -.-

Merchants actually aren't a monolithic group. Some might try to shard scam or lure you. Others might report fake trades to their alts...
Some are honest.
But if I'm selling something, I'm taking a risk that it won't fall on me. I don't know if anyone's heard of bitcoin, but phats are the original bitcoin. They go up... and down.
As a result, if I'm buying a rare, I will stand in w2... day after day... waiting... until some lvl 3 rwter logs in. He'll be in a rush to sell, accepting any price, and I'll buy.
Then. I wait. And wait, day after day, until a staker logs in. He'll be in a rush to buy. He'll overpay.
The key to merching is waiting. If you want to buy cheap, then wait, and wait, and wait, and wait, and wait, perhaps months. Eventually, you'll see, a lvl 3 rwter log in, dumping his phats for cheap.
Also, sometimes, rares fall. They fall due to, among other reasons, people trying to sell, sometimes not for rwt.
It's well to be wary, but players who just assume everyone is a manip and are rude... tend to get blocked. If you want to buy something, expect to wait several months. That is what the "pros" do.
"Pros" also tend to have 1 of each phat, with 1 of each of other items too, and massive shard stacks. Now, I assume, shards are also stored on alts. Shard boxes aren't so easy as people think. When cheap items are for sale, shards run dry quickly.

Some might not be aware, but merchants don't always know the accurate price range.
Imagine trying to track bitcoin without some website telling you the price. Maybe not the best example, but phats are very difficult, because you don't know which trades are real.
And I don't use discord. So, if I'm trading, I get "real" prices from the few people I trust. If they log out, or quit, then I just don't know pricing. I might check the forums for some idea, but that's not always a good source.
There are people who play runescape who sometimes log out. Some of those people might sometimes buy or sell a phat. They don't necessarily know the value either.

To put another way, the few people I can get prices from tell me almost as a sort of charity. They don't benefit, and they don't have to tell me. And, they can be wrong.
I've noticed some will not follow trends well. So, their prices can be wrong when prices are changing. You just have to learn what it means when one person gives a price and another. You figure what each source is good at, what he knows. And you use your judgement.
