Edit: The timeline for this is August, alongside reduced death costs. But engine work is not simple. Prepare for delays.

Thanks for clarifying this. Yes, if they say this August, it will probably happen next year if we are lucky.

Hopefully buying low-volume discontinued rare items like Half full wine jug will be a lot easier.

Sorry, I re-checked Roadmap. It's Autumn* 2022. So there's a few months to go potentially.

The big question is… Would it be smart to try sell our higher rares for as much as we can now and buy back cheaper later?

Are highers gonna crash between now and the release of this new system?

We know lowers did. RSH was 4.2b+ last night and today were being mass sold for 3.7 and went as low as 3.6b. However, they seem to have bottomed at 3.6b.

H’weens dropped also but not as aggressively. I think the high volume/hoarding of RSH caused the panic as the hoarders didn’t want to be stuck with RSH’s.

I did see some people today trying to sell their Phats and BSH/Holly etc, but not as many as I thought I’d see.

Please share your opinions on this topic.

Is it better to be liquid right now? Probably, although I think we've seen the "short-term bottom" already due to panic. I think there will be some stabilization around the levels we're seeing now, and then even after the update goes live...possibly another round of panic trading. After a short while, we might even see a rally when folks realize the changes aren't that drastic short-term.

I think the 10-25% drop we've seen on lowers makes plenty of sense. There's a lot of uncertainty. We don't know how the the tax is going to impact deflation, although the death cost adjustment is being made to try to balance the effects of that.

Based on the drop we've seen in santa hats, I think partyhats, bsh, holly wreath, and other rares should drop similarly. Partyhats might be affected greater, but we're not seeing any immediate effects since holders are sitting tight and watching. I think that once we start to see some trades, those rares should drop by a similar percentage.

Personally, I think this is an overreaction in the short-term. Long-term, I see rare growth being slowed down a bit. These changes should be good for the economy, longer-term. The max cash limit raise is also very long overdue, and will help to minimize scamming.

No one is stupid enough to panic sell phats, nor do they have a reason to do so

I have witnessed tax on OSRS. It did nothing to high-end items, actually, most of high-end items on OSRS are reaching all time high prices

Now, there's so much gold on RS3 and a lot more is entering every minute. For tax to be efficient it needs to sink more gold than enters the game, and I doubt this is possible

The rares i own i will never sell, to me they are a part of runescape history and worth more to me then gold and it has taken me many years of my life to get them. many like me will collect and never sell when prices drop taking more and more out every year. as far as dropping max cash limit i say welcome to a new era.

i think most ppl who own rares dont need the money right away, also collectors wont give up their collection for this, being able to use the ge is nice tho because you can put it in the ge for the price you want and eventually even if it takes a really long time it will sell. trusting certain pc lists or prices of items or websites that dont belong to jagex will get you into trouble notice: external websites and trades are your responsibility, dont get fooled!.

I agree. It is incredible to me that Jagex follows the same rhetoric than those complaining in reddit. Party hats not being obtainable the Jmod said? Well... surprise! That's what happens when a discontinued item with low volume is traded to an increasing demand (slowly increasing but increasing nonetheless). If they are not rereleased (and I hope they are never rereleased because that defies the purpose of owning one as a goal), there will eventually come a point where everybody that has one phat or high end rare will not want to sell. What is Jagex going to do then? Force them to sell? I thought we had a free market here.

Jagex has consistently failed to provide any good end game goal (or gold sink) besides phat/rares. If they touch the rare market, that will be the end of the game for so many players that do pvm to grow their banks in hopes to eventually own a phat/rare. Let's be honest here... why do we have people grinding bosses instead of just casually pvming? Because they want more money to afford things and when they already have all BIS equipment and upgrades, what is there to buy? Quitting becomes more of an option and Jagex does not want that.

Regarding the GE tax... let's see how it plays out. On one hand, it is a welcomed update because of how it is linked to death cost incentivizing more people to get involved in pvm. I would say this will negatively affect high end gear, not rares though.

On the other hand, I would argue that since the average rs player has over 5 years of wealth creation in their account (maybe more?), old players won't be affected as they are barely using the GE to buy new equipment or expensive gear. They mostly do pvm supplies I assume. The ones paying the biggest portion are those newer players anyways. Does it help inflation? Yes, but also wealth distribution. Those on top will find more ways to increase their inventory of rares as they drop because of panic sellers, leaving the supply in shambles.

1% ge tax is good for inflation if they want to keep releasing bosses that spam out alchables to make pvm profitable. Now their plans for the rares that they are keeping hidden is kinda spooky.
I dont think they are going to release them again out of thin air but they might release rares from banned accounts (there are a lot of them in those accounts, and probably enough supply to keep the demand going for a while). If they do so they will probably release them in small amounts, after they got an idea how many are traded through the ge once the update hits.
Other possibility is they adding new discontinued items with same rarity as phats for example that could compete. Simplest idea would be black, orange, grey phats so on so on, a lot of colors to go through. Or other desirable cosmetics all together.
If you bought your rares because they have sentimental value or whatever keep them. If they are merely investments i'd say better safe than sorry.
That's just my opinion, i'm keeping my shit rares and edibles because they are already cheap as hell so no point in selling. But my phats are gonna go idc if it backfires, got no attachements to them

People saying that the game will die out is what is wrong with this game- it’s too conservative and the game needs progression to reach a new generation of players who were born well after the release of these rares such as Phats- if we adhere only to old generation wishes then the game Truly dies out because fewer new players will be introduced.

The issue is that as long as phats and other rates exist as end game goals- rwt will be rampant- and if you don’t care about this it’s okay- but truth is that ppl doing rwt earn gp by immoral means such as scamming and luring. And they do it so well that it becomes a job for them- spending irl money on scripts and even hiring teams…

In a video by crumble a guy got so well at it that he scammed 1 tril gp in a month! I lost my red phat in 2018 by lure/ scammer because I was going through a hard time in my life and a lurer happened to take advantage of my emotions -

The worst part wasn’t that my red phat wasn’t returned, it was that the player didn’t even get banned!!

I’ll never earn the money to get my red phat back- I just did a week of 10hrs a day of Croesus and I only earned 900m gp doing 4 mans! Just as an example- I remember trading a full black g armor for a Santa hat back in the day and then full guthans for a white- how the eff can a phat be worth 10x the best armor is funny to me

Re-release rares- end game goals are already comp capes and collections from bossing —- rares are artificial and in fact more people find out they never can get one, the more people who give up on the game- at least getting a comp cape and a boss collection is obtainable

The problem with "progress" is that the wrong type of change can also kill a project.

Often you hear about those that "adapted" in the right way. Rarely do you hear of those that adapted poorly, vanishing as a result.

Careful thinking is generally better than change for the sake of change.
