Phats are still very low volume. GE will just open huge opportunities and margins.
Exciting times I'd say so, especially for us who have been dealing with 3rd age items back in the good old days! - This will be like that, just on roids!

A simple solution is also in line with what was mentioned in the stream.
Discontinued items, or perhaps only the 6 partyhats, will be treated differently.
I think the best solution is that the tax for these items is attached to the player, not to the item.
So, for example, you can buy or sell a partygat on the GE for free. No tax. Once you do a certain amount of these trades, you get taxed 1%. And the taxes continue to ramp up to the point that merching them is unfeasible. Perhaps the ramp-up system could ramp down or even reset if you stop trading them for a while.
This tax couldn't feasibly apply to person-to-person trades. This would incentivize merchants to stay off the GE, so then there could be some kind of cooldown period such that you can only person-to-person trade one partyhat per interval of time.
This way we are not nuking partyhats, but just the merchants.

i gotta agree it's definitely time for them to raise the max cash. i never understood why it was so low. the tax on the other hand was the reason i stay away from old school now, so that's going to be annoying.
The tax is a bit low but it will do.
Paying 1% tax in ge is still better then paying 10% tax to a merchant so i dont see many incentives to keep trading rares player to player.
