I think scaling up RuneScape is a good idea. The main reason to do it, though, would be to create more room for new content.
And that creating "cool new content" is a bigger priority is reasonable. Hopefully, though, they will figure out a way to put a bit more space between locations in RuneScape that doesn't have too great a risk of introducing bugs, and which will require only limited effort to achieve.

If we keep sticking to small insignificant updates that hardly affect the dynamics of the game and do not focus on becoming a unique experience when compared to other MMO's and other RPG/adventure games, this game won't last.
We've already lost many players, and what exactly are we doing to gain more?
This is a good point. Of course, in recent news, the other game that is similar to RuneScape but is more well-known has also lost a bunch of subscribers.
The C++ client will allow the "look" of RuneScape to be improved, making it comparable to home video games and some of the other web-based games out there, so I think it will be a big help.
Despite Jagex having learned from what went wrong in the introduction of Evolution of Combat, there may not be any perfect way to make an existing game more accessible to new players without devaluing the accomplishments of old ones.

You guys should check out the Expanded Map from
this jmod thread
(scroll down until the Exploration and Adventure title part).
Sure it comes from old school and is about sailing ok, but that map can still give us a better idea of the game-world put into a better proportions, decluttering and expansion. The whole continent looks much more natural, and there are tons of new room where brand new content and stories could be inserted and developed

To me that map doesn't seem to be extended in any way. It just looks like the existing world map, but drawn in an old-fashioned style.
Of much more interest, is the text that goes with it:

With sailing, we would like every trip out into open waters to feel like a brand new experience. Each time you take your ship out you should have no idea what may come your way. With randomly generated seas and an unthinkable number of possible challenges that could be thrown at you, the sense of adventure that will come with sailing is something that will be unrivaled in Old School.
If you replace 'sailing' with 'traveling', and all references to water and oceans with trees and forests, then you get exactly the type of content that has been suggested in this thread for filling the newly created spaces between cities.

Freeform Buildings, Surface World Plots, Community Involvement, Environments, Skills and much, much more...!
I understand this would be a massive update and would take months. This however, does not matter. I really hope they will rescale Gielinor even though it would take months. Until then, please improve draw distance like promised years ago!
