Zarosians go to Erebus after they died doesn't mean Erebus is the afterlife for only Zarosians. Other beings can go there too.

There can be many afterlifes for different beings, similar to hell and heaven.

Of course there is no information in game regarding Erebus or else this thread won't be in this Future Game Updates forum. Remember, we are discussing any suspected updates in this forum too.

TY.

Now let me answer OP's question more precisely:

"So my question is, what exactly is Erebus?"

It is a part of the Underworld where bad souls get banished to and continue to receive suffering. We may think of it as "hell", and the Shadow, Xau-Tak, is probably being imprisoned there and he has been trying to break through the "rift" twice - once through Bilrach who thought he was helping to free Zamorak, and the 2nd time through Moia... and failed. He is now counting on Zaros to arrange the ultimate Ritual to bring him back to Gielinor.

There was also Kranon's attempt at the ritual in Ulthven Kreath and Rabid Jacks' attempt to summon Xau-Tak as well. Didn't it supposedly lose alot of power after Kranon's attempt?

Light and Shadow certainly don't just refer to Sliske. You certainly forgot about Zaros and Seren. We had Yak to the Shadow a few months ago, and Yak to the Light coming up in a couple of days. Don't tell us this is all about Sliske. :D

I don't think Sliske impaled himself with the Staff of Armadyl and put his "essence' on the Mask of Shadow/Light. And don't forget even Wizard Trindy made fun of Sliske for calling himself the "master of shadow".... hint hint... the Shadow (and in the same respect Light) doesn't refer to Sliske... but somebody far more masterful. ;)

More hint... the Crown of Saradomin is certainly not created by Saradomin and likewise Armadyl didn't create the Staff of Armadyl. ;)

Guthix planned everything about the outcome with Sliske though didn't he, if you've unlocked the memories at the hall of memories it goes over it all, interesting reads.

He was also the one that infused us with Anathema when he made us the World Guardian, be it via Sliske's Essence transferring into us, or Guthix's own power. How Guthix gained the ability to use Anathema though I don't think it's mentioned anywhere.

I believe I mentioned the two sources I could find in game in my OP. I read the Wiki page as well and it's quite interesting that both Death and Ichtlarin have either not heard of it or in the latter's case, not guided any souls there yet.

In Ichtlarin's case, could it be that he cannot access Erebus due to Anathema perhaps?
We know of a few Zarosian Mahjarrat that have died (Jhallan in ROTM being an example I can remember)

EDIT: Unless Mahjarrat sacrificed during their rituals don't count as their power is absorbed?

I think the Mahjarrat are a special case in this scenario, if they die during the Ritual their essence is absorbed by the rest, I dont believe their soul goes anywhere, i believe its consumed. Knowing Zaros, Erebus is probably a plane in which he gather the souls of those who are/were loyal to him and harvests them there(possibly). Perhaps entities such as Xau-Tak reside there and I strongly believe the shadow anima is originating from there. This whole shadow anima vs normal anima much like mater vs anti-mater. So, if Erebus is the plane from which the shadow anime originates, perhaps this plane is some sort of ''anti'' plane of the one we are living in.

The Wiki is not in game information. It is comments of the users. Even Azzanadra doesn't know where Erebus is and what is it like from the real in game dialogue and he only learned it from his lord (meaning Zaros more likely) as nobody has returned from Erebus to tell their story.

Who lost alot of power? Xau-Tak? I don't think so, as the powers to bring back a demonic being in a typical ritual comes from the item/being being sacrificed.

Buddist monks and Christians may not have heard of the afterlifes of each other. It is hardly surprising if there are different afterlifes or there are different regions of the same afterlife.
