So I've been doing some heavy investigating for the past month now and there is currently a job posting on the Jagex website for the "unannounced MMO" for a "Technical Director - Unreal 4." So two things from this have been revealed. One, the unannounced mmo (RuneScape Remastered) is definitely being made in Unreal Engine 4 which was still up in the air because the majority of postings for the unannounced mmo were for both Unity and Unreal Engine. Second, the new MMO is definitely either in full-scale production as of this point OR will soon be. The reason this is the case is because a technical director position would not be posted unless it was in full-scale development.

You've made some awfully sweeping assumptions here.

You assumed that Jagex are only working on one new game. That assumption is already known to be incorrect and has been for some time: Jagex are working on several games including at least one MMO intended specifically for the Chinese audience.

Nothing here specifically confirms the project(s) in question are RuneScape Remastered. RuneScape Remastered is not specifically mentioned; since Jagex have multiple projects at the moment it could as easily refer to any of those as it could refer to RuneScape Remastered.

My own personal belief:

Andrew Gower is known to be working on an advanced, modern RuneScape-like engine. He tweets about his progress from time to time, and it's capabilities are clearly designed with a RuneScape-like game in mind. This engine was lightly brought-up on the 18th Anniversary stream.

Andrew will not discuss why he is making the engine, though his website does mention there is a top-secret project he's working on.

Despite the fact that Andrew left Jagex many years ago, he still has a love for RuneScape, is still happy to be associated with it, and has a healthy and good relationship with Jagex.

Make of that what you will.

They have stated numerous times that they are working on multiple projects, but the new MMO is the only one I am interested in. Jagex are currently working on ONE singular MMO (Call it RuneScape Remastered or whatever you will) and have nowhere stated that it will be solely for Chinese Markets. If you are referring to their road map that was disclosed at a Chinese convention some time back then I just want to point out that nowhere during that did they say it was being made exclusively for the Chinese market. That being said, the Job posting was listed for UNANNOUNCED MMO and the job is for someone implementing what's on paper in to the actual engine. I fail to see how this is an assumption. Considering how much research I've actually done on this I find it hard to believe that there is any information (of what little there currently is) I might have missed. Please feel free to prove me otherwise.

Also all listings for the unannounced MMO have been listed for Unreal/Unity game engine (Now confirmed for Unreal Engine 4). Completely out of the question that Andrew Gower is creating an entirely new game engine. Not only would it be stupid on part of Jagex from a business perspective, but the shear time that it would take to create an entirely new game engine for a project of this size is completely out of the question.

That being said, I just want to reiterate that regardless of it's official title, an unannounced mmo set in the runescape universe is currently or will soon be in full-scale production. I have no need of arguing that point because I already know that to be a fact.

Here is the road map that leads to this conclusion.

- Over a year ago multiple job postings were listed on the Jagex website for an Unannounced MMO for those with experience in Unreal engine 4 and Unity game engine.
- With rumors swirling around Mod Balance confirmed that this was indeed something they were working on, however, it was in early stages of pre-production and there was no guarantee it would make it out of that stage. For more info on what the game will focus on google "Mod Balance RuneScape Remastered." There are multiple reddit pages that quote him on this.
- Multiple Jagex employees were pulled from development on RS3 on to development for the unannounced MMO.
- Over the course of the past year multiple other job postings were listed for an "unannounced mmo."
- Within the past few weeks a job posting for the unannounced mmo was listed for "Technical Director - Unreal 4."
- Knowing what a technical director's job is we can now definitively say the the unannounced mmo is or will soon be in full-scale production as if the idea was scrapped/still in early stages of pre-production that this job would not be necessary.

If nothing transferred I'd play an entirely new game rather than starting over.

There's a big difference in restarting a game you've already played, and playing a brand new one for the first time.

This is one of the many reasons I got burned out on OSRS after like, a week after coming back in December.

Unless they literally change everything and make an entirely new game, or stats/items are ported over, I won't be touching it.

Far better games out there I ain't tried yet, and many more I'd play again over RS.

Another restart would feel like starting another Witcher 3 run on same difficulty each time; you've already done everything and know the best methods to do it. Gets old really fast.

First it’s 7 teams working on rs and external guys handling mobile. Then it’s teams being pulled from projects because mobile. Now it’s teams being pulled from projects because new mmo.

No wonder we get 4 decent updates a year and tons of mtx.

The teams working on other games are entirely separate from those running RS3 live and OSRS live.

That is what we were told about mobile, but apparently it’s not the case. Same idea here, do you think the core runescape team is not helping the people who try to create a runescape clone?

Seeing how Wall Street and Main Street applaud Apex Legends, I think Jagex will try to keep the details of their next unannounced MMO (Remastered, or whatever its actual name will be) unannounced until it is ready.

However, it is pretty much sure the team working on that project is hardly any team currently working on RS3 and OSRS. That's why we still see all the quality work like POF, M&S reworks as well as quests, live events, ED, Combat updates etc all delivered as we were told. We can also see the headcounts of Jagex employees shooting up close to 400 from 320. Obviously, new hires are there to work on new projects.

Although details of the new MMO have been held secret, we can still make some sense out of their new job posts what the new MMO will be like. For instance, from a Jagex job post a couple of weeks ago:

We’re not just looking for something “realistic” or “stylised” we seek originality, we seek to build experiences that players wish to still play for decades to come.

That sounds like an MMO with futuristic and unrealistic animations, maybe some heroes with 2 heads and 4 arms, implants, nanobots etc. :D

Recalling from some old posts that MMO is said to be at the end of the 6th Age, that gives me the feeling it is some kind of post apocalyptic MMO with mutation/transformation in the making... It also reminds me of the assets Jagex have developed from Transformers Universe.

All I can say is if it is a completely revamped RS system in the same world. They better show some love to their old fanbases seniority somehow. Whether it just be some very unique cosmetics or something of the like for accounts over 15 years old. Otherwise I will have very little motivation to participate.

The only reason I still play to this day despite disliking the fact half of the game is dead (minigames / pking) is due to nostalgia and time already endured.
Hmmm.. that you Zaros?
