I’m also against removal of the forums. While it is true that I’m an older player who honestly usually doesn’t feel a need to post unless it’s serious; I do feel like it’s yet another case of Jagex telling us they really don’t care.

Yes, I am an older player, and no I am not going to sign up for Twitter or any other social media to be able to provide my feedback. I do really caution you against continuing to alienate and push aside us older players; this is an older game and if you really want us to get with the times, there’s other MMOs out there.

As usual, Jagex takes the most drastic option. Scaling back the forums would have made more sense. And just because there may not show a large number of people in the forums doesn’t mean that there aren’t people who are offline but reading them.

Farewell to my forum friends. I’d hoped after the Hero Pass fiasco that we were on track for an improved relationship between different players and Jagex but clearly not. All we can do is vote with our wallet. Thanks for the memories and best of luck to you all out there.

There was a time when the forums were members only. I was F2P at the time, so I couldn't get involved. I forget if you could read without posting but I didn't want to lurk in a place I couldn't even talk in. I think the forums were in decline by the time they realized it was dumb to arbitrarily gate the main form of community engagement that way. It makes me wonder how many people may have been around without posting from those days. How to block a forum user

Unless I am missing something, the RSOF sees more activity than Discord.
Depending on the metrics you use, you'll end up with different results.

If you take message/post results: The RSOF sees around 4,000 - 5,000 posts per week. The RuneScape Discord sees around 30,000 - 35,000 messages per week (I'm including areas like the Design Chat section in this where you need to give yourself a role to be able to access it, but is still publicly viewable non-the-less). Sure, people might post a few messages at a time just to say one sentence, but that doesn't make up 30,000 +.

For the interest of clarity, here are some statistics on the current activity of the RuneScape Discord server:
* Daily visitors to the RS3 Discord varies, but usually hovers between 1,000 to 4,000, with a spike usually on update days. An average of 2,000 visitors daily.
* About 10% of the daily visitors to the server are sending messages on average, which means 90% of visitors consist of lurkers. (this is people who physically visit the server)
* Each day a single user sends an average of 33-ish messages.
* Each day the voice chats see approx 1,350 minutes "Speaking Minutes" (how many minutes of the day are taken up with someone speaking in a voice channel).
* In the last 28 days there have been 7,500 unique visitors to the #announcements channel, where news is posted. #general is at 2,600 unique visitors with 585 unique users chatting in that channel. #rs-clock (where you can be notified of in-game events such as warbands notifications) saw 1,700 unique visitors.
* There are around 5,000 other servers following the #announcements channel (when we post to #announcements we can publish news to other servers that follow that channel).

I use all the platforms and still find the forums the best place to engage and collect feedback.

I can't say I didn't expect this though.. I feel they've neglected their forums since the reshuffle back in 2009/2010 after it failed to engage the support/engagement they hoped for and subsequently phased it all out into the social media sphere from 2012 onwards.

I'm not sure if they'll allow the forum style areas on their official Discord or not but without somewhere to actively pin feedback within a thread, it's hard to believe Jagex are interested in the feedback itself rather than the engagement within a posts reactions. The latter leading into that if a response is negative; then passing the mic over to content creators; the players within Jagex and/or subsequently some mild engagement within the community attending RuneFest. As opposed to just listening also to the community at large, who can post publicly in an open forum, which is problematic of the company to remove.

I'm definitely against it, especially since there is a strong and vocal community on these forums but of course if Jagex doesn't want to fully engage with us, then I won't say much more on that. :(

This is not a good thing.

This will definitely make me re-think my support for this game.

Not everyone who plays this game uses Reddit or Twitter and, Discord is horribly disorganized.

This is not going to be good for RS at all.

I will definitely be re-thinking my future support.

First we lost the Premier club, now the forums too?

Taking away things that people pay for isn't the "flex" you think it is.

Totally horrible move.

Jack Scape, If I came on strong, so it also seemed to me that you did.

There is a lack of tone in written word, where if one does not know the speaker, it can perhaps be read differently from intent.

Having gone back to reread, I also see edits, so maybe I replied to what I read first, which seemed to me a bit dismissive. As is the case quite often with many holding strong opinions who disagree with that to which they're replying.

Plenty of people use the forum, in their own ways, which will not show up in "active users online/in this forum". No one is "here" right now, but that doesn't mean no one, or even several no ones, don't have a tab open that they refresh occasionally, without ever logging in.

My other point is: NONE of them are "no one".

Most players don't want these kind of heavily moderated forums anymore
Just look at the petitions or posts, as a % of players barely anyone will even notice the forums go
If there is any kind of community here you'll soon set another base up on the myriad of other forums

And face it Jages have had this in mind for along time, with some jmods even stating they couldn't be bothered to log into accounts to post here
With a lazy attitude like that the days of RS forums were numbered

I wouldn't really call the group speaking out insignificant. Jagex ignoring a portion of their players doesn't mean the group they're ignoring is too small to matter. The problem is very much on them. It's not that no one wants platforms like the forums anymore, it's that people can't be bothered to maintain them or provide an alternative that actually serves the functions being lost by removing the forums. That's one of the big problems with replacing forums with current social media platforms. We never got a proper replacement for forums.

Discord is mostly a live chat/voice chat service. Twitch is for people who spend hours watching streams and the comments are just a tiny live chat to react to the stream. Streamers can't keep up with the chat, which makes it an even worse feedback avenue than Discord. Twitter is designed for short posts and designed to curate content based on an algorithm geared towards showing you things you'll get mad about. It's also being run into the ground by a guy who has no idea what he's doing and stripping it of everything that makes it work. TBH even if you already have an account there, you really shouldn't bother with it.

Reddit's content is set up like a feed you have to scroll through based on popularity, which makes it difficult to find anything that isn't recent or trendy enough. This easily drowns out a lot of stuff and pressures people to conform to whatever that particular bubble expects, which isn't conductive to varied content and feedback. It's also not suited to creating and maintaining threads people can easily search for years after the fact.

There's also the issue that having an on site community resource accessed with your in game account is incredibly valuable in a way that can never be replicated with a third party platform. Any extra hoop you place is going to cut out part of the player community from your feedback and engagement.

sure i got a twitter, discord and reddit account but i still like this forum the most. it is the original and the best

the other sites can also be a crapshoot at times. reddit is ok i guess and will probably become the norm, but discord and twitter.... yer... no
Logic, who needs it...
