"getting a typical yield of like 42 herbs per patch, after planting 10 seeds."
Ouch. Just using Jagex's chart, showing about 3x yield for 10 compared to 1.
You could expect to get 14 for 1 seed. And then 28 for the other 9.
It's all about the per patch yield, not the per seed yield for those who are selling off their products in real time. I don't understand the rationale for doing so, but I understand why they are wowed by the results. If you're looking at the short term only, 42 per patch looks awesome.
When all kinds of players, including skillers and pvmers both like the update, it is good for the economy. Otherwise, we will see them rioting instead of farming,
It is even better to see new and returning players enjoy the new update in FSW too.

That certainly makes sense on paper, but in practice your results might not be as expected. And once more, what you're describing above is a player who buys their seeds, and sells the herbs as they harvest them.
To me, that doesn't make a lot of sense if the aim is to maximize a profit and that all goes back to how volatile the herblore market is overall. Limiting that to just herbs (i.e. excluding secondaries), the price fluctuations can be insane. Go look at the historical graphs on wiki for something like toadflax to get a better of picture of this. IMO, timing the market is the most important thing if you're looking to get the most out of your efforts. And since broad fluctuations can stretch over a six month period or more, planting less seeds with more yield and then stockpiling it all, would make more sense if a player's goal is absolute profit.
But to each their own.
It's probably easier to take it on from an ironman perspective (since they only can use the stuff or discard it - but not sell it to others and thus aren't forced to take the economy into account): Do you value more your time or your material? Time is a restricted component after all as well...
A regular account, that values their time, might not even bother growing the stuff at all and rather do some content, that will net them billions with some singular drop alone. But an ironman, who gets certain kinds of seeds in generous amounts (again arch glacor, dunno how telos would look like at high enrages) will certainly more likely, would only with that even have the option to use all those things.
You obviously do nothing wrong by solely sticking to 1 seed at a time - it worked for 16 years after all, but you just got an option to get rid off more quickly of low value seeds without either discarding or selling them. Might or might not worth it your time - but if time is an issue, the 1 seed option certainly isn't one for you.

The hidden update starting

or something would be nice and a hint to

.
It's a trade sequence - it's not like the others would be more obvious. And seemingly players have beaten it, otherwise the wiki couldn't tell you anything about it.
Still I suspect J-mods leaked the information to their favorite players and that's how word got out about it, particularly how to begin it with the sunken box which no one on Earth would have found on their own. And that's the way most things go in this game.
J-Mod > favored elite player > their clan and closest friends > finally the rest of us who bother to read reddit, Twitter and/or hop on discord.

As a part of the edgeville rebuildathon in 2018 some Jmod has released a rock near the fairy ring that could be used as a range. Some player had discovered the functionality over three years later. Also the same for lots of other easter eggs.
That this was solved on day 1 may be suspicious, but I wouldn't doubt at all somebody eventually would have found it out anyway. And with the exception of the first step this thing is well solvable - so a nudge 'something is hidden at the hub' wasn't
too
insane for that matter - it's not like, that this place would be a big area where you would potentially could leave stones unturned.

Hidden updates are fun. I don't know how "elite" it is to be the first one who find out the hidden update, and how is that person "favored" by Jmod(s). At least, that "elite" person won't win any Nobel Prize for discovering any hidden update in game.
If RS3 gave that "elite" person free membership for being the first one to discover and/or complete the hidden updates, then I may have doubts in them.
